Women's workshops at Yellow Bike Project
Several other cities have done this, but I think it's a first for Yellow Bike. All through May they're going to be offering Women-only workshops every Saturday morning from 9:30am to 11am, at which point they'll open up for a regular shop. I don't know if there's one on the 16th, but here's the info from the bike month calendar:
What: Women’s Workshop Series at The Yellow Bike Project
When: Every Saturday in May, 9:30am – 11:00am
Where: Yellow Bike Project at Treasure City 1720 E. 12th StreetEach Saturday in May build your bike knowledge in a women only setting, and then stick around after the clinic and practice with coordinator support. Workshops are not necessarily sequential but do get more advanced each Saturday. Registration not required but space is limited. We will try to accommodate all that want to participate.
Workshop I (2nd) - Meet your bike. I.D. parts and components. Learn to patch a flat. Learn how to fit a bike.
Workshop II (9th) - Making adjustments with few or no tools: An overview of brakes and derailleurs
Workshop III (23rd) - Brakes and shifting in-depth: Cable routing and set-up.
Workshop IV (30th) - Cups and bearings: Overhauling headsets, bottom brackets, and hubs. We'll teach wheel truing to anyone who wants to know.
Excellent! A lot of bike events/shops/races in Austin seem to be sausage fests, so anything that can be done to get more women interested in this aspect of cycling gets a big YOU PEOPLE FREAKING RULE from me. Anyone who doubts the importance of women knowing how to properly operate and repair bikes should read this. There's a bit of history behind the movement.
The clinic was fantastic, definitely something to be experienced. Ladies, if you want to know thy bike, come on down! It was an inviting and interactive atmosphere; having a knowledge base is where riding confidence and empowerment truly begins.
Did I mention YBP rulez?

There is no mention of the Woman's Bike event on May 2nd on the YBP calendar. Has this been totally confirmed?
It's on. I received an email stating that no registration is required, just show up! Coffee and snacks at 9:30, then on to the good stuff. :)
See ya'll there!
