City Council Hearing on the Bike Plan - aka. THE BIG ONE!
Update: You need to sign up "to speak" for Agenda Number 61 PH. You don't necessarily have to speak if you don't want to, but this is how you show your support. You also don't have to be there for the meeting, you can go down and sign up beforehand and it'll count.
Ok folks, it's nearly that time. Though the struggle to complete the bicycle plan update has been on-going for some time now, it all comes down to this month's City Council meeting and their vote on whether or not to approve it. If you've been waiting for the right opportunity to show up to one of Austin's action-packed City Council meetings, wait no longer. Here's what the LOBV has to say about the event:
City Council Hearing on the Bike Plan
Thursday, May 21st at 6 pm.The Public Hearing to adopt the update to the City’s Bicycle Master Plan will be at that time (although depending where we end up the agenda, could end up being anytime after 6 pm up to 10pm). You can sign up to speak, or simply sign up for or against the plan and check “not wishing to speak.” You can sign up starting Monday afternoon, May 18th at the kiosks on the first floor of City Hall, and can sign up up until the public hearing is closed on the 21st.
The Plan can be viewed by clicking below (Note that there is a change addendum as the last PDF which contains additions/deletions to the plan which we plan to administer assuming Council adoption of the plan and addendum).
As you can probably tell, this one's IMPORTANT! It would mean the world to everyone involved in the creation and passing of the bicycle plan update if we had a PACKED HOUSE of cyclists for this one. In fact, this one's so big that the regularly-scheduled BAC meeting has been canceled this month just so that all the BAC members can show up and speak on the plan's behalf. There's been some outspoken resistance to the new plan, which calls for some outspoken supporters. Yes, I'm talking about YOU.
There are going to be several rides beforehand to gather cyclists that all descend on City Hall at the start of this meeting, but if you can't get in on one of these rides, make one of your own, grab as many cyclists as you can, and show up at City Hall around 6 or so. Please folks, if you do ONE good thing for the City all year, make it showing up and supporting the bike plan update on the 21st. Thanks!
