Hey does anybody have any suggestions for a bike that i can ride on rough trails and in the city? I want it to be able to take a lot of beatings but at the same time i dont want to be dieing while using it as a commuting bike. Preferably a mountain bike that has a lockable front fork so i can just get some thin slicks to put on when i want to take it on the road. I'd really appreciate any feedback anybody could give me. Thanks!
It sounds as if you really want a mountain bike in preference to a road bike.
MTB bikes for rough trails tend to have heavy shocks. Shocks aren't all that useful for road riding because of the weight and part of your energy expenditure converts into up-and-down motion rather than forward motion.
For a good road bike you want lighter weight, no suspension.
