Safe Passing Bill PASSES! All that's left is a signature...
I just saw the following news on the Bike Texas website, which was released late yesterday:
The final version of the Safe Passing Bill, SB 488, was passed yesterday by the Texas House. Today, the Senate voted on it, and overwhelmingly voted to pass it.
That was the final step for the bill to complete in the Legislature. Now, it will be sent to Governor Perry, and we are cautiously optimistic that he will sign it into law. We will know the outcome by June 21, the last day the Governor can sign or veto bills.
Thank you all for your help and support so far. We will keep you updated on the bill's progress. To read the bill text, see the bill authors, or check the record votes, click here.
YES!!! This is a big one folks, and something that the state bicycle rights advocates have been fighting for for YEARS! Our job isn't finished yet though, as the Governor can still decide to veto the bill if he's having a bad hair day, gets light-jumped by a cyclist that morning, or for whatever other inane reason pops in his head between thoughts of secession and tea bagging/parties, whatever that's all about. What you can do RIGHT NOW is contact the governor and request that he sign bill SB 488 into law. It only takes a few seconds and if a couple thousand people write him over the issue, it could do wonders for getting it signed with expediency.
Great news, y'all! Damn, now I'm in a good mood.
