Urban Assault Ride needs volunteers!
As most of you probably already know, the big New Belgium Brewery Urban Assault Ride is coming up in a couple weekends, and they've put out TWO, yes TWO different calls for volunteers. I typically don't go crazy advertising the event due to the extreme cost involved (over $100 PER TEAM), helmets mandatory rule, and lame street restrictions, but I'm all about volunteerism, free entry in events, and most of all FREE BEER. First up is an opportunity posted on BikeMojo for volunteers the day before. It's a 7 hour shift but it includes FREE entry into the race. Here's the skinny:
We're giving away 5 team entries (teams are 2 people) to the Austin New Belgium Urban Assault Ride on 6/28. This ride is going to sell out, so this is a great opportunity.
In exchange for the entries, we need your help at packet pick up the day before the race (6/27 from 9am - 4pm). On race day, you'll get all the good stuff: event entry, sweet shirt, bike bell, drawstring backpack, water bottle, FREE beer, food, and prize raffle entries.
If you're down: please contact jackie at adventurefit dotcom
The second opportunity is for volunteering the day of the event. This one was posted to Craigslist earlier this afternoon (thanks Wendy!):

The Yellow Bike Project is also putting together volunteer teams, and YBP gets a substantial donation if Russell can get enough people. I'm volunteering for Russell and YBP, and I'd encourage everyone to give their time to YBP to help their building fund. It may be the case he has enough people now, but please check with Russell first.
So you're doing 7 hours of work to cover a $55 entry fee... Granted it's a good deal if you're into volunteering your time and making the craziness that is event packet pick-up happen, it's not a deal if you're just trying to pick up registration on the cheap... It comes out to about $7.86/hour. I guess when you add New Belgium schwag to the list, you make out all right, not to mention ladies that will be there picking shit up. The ladies however, are only a myth... Only a myth...
... and such, meet lots of people you wouldn't meet otherwise. It doesn't sound like such a bad deal -- it all depends on what you're after and how much time and money you've got.
And from what I can tell, the ladies are very real!
Though I have to wonder ... does the ride actually make money for it's sponsors? When I think of volunteering for something, I'm thinking it's a non-profit or a charity -- but at $55/head, with much of the labor being performed by unpaid volunteers, this sounds like it ought to be able to make money. Maybe it's a very shrewd business plan, or maybe it just comes close to breaking even.
Oh well, idle curiosity, though I don't really care either way ...
