Biker possibly killed on McNeil.

Coming in this morning at 8am, there was quite a bit of emergency vehicles going down McNeil from 183. From what I hear the accident was at McNeil/Research Park intersection. So far that is all I know.

If anyone has any info, please let me know..

Update: Just drove by the site. From the looks of it a vehicle was driving eastbound on McNeil (towards Parmer). I saw no skid marks on the road that I could tell. On the far side of the intersection I saw where the person was at. They had a circle on the ground labeled "HEAD". Jason told me someone did see the accident though.

Update 2: (From Jason) Here's what I heard on the BicycleAustin mailing list:

Turns out, a coworker saw the immediate aftermath. From his description, it sounded like a left-hook: motorist turning left from McNeil onto Research Park impacted cyclist, who I guess was traveling on McNeil toward Parmer ... ? Not real sure, but coworker said cyclist smashed windshield on car, and was laying on the ground, not moving, several folks standing around, holding his head/neck. Don't know any more than that.

Thanks for letting us know, Lane. Anyone have any confirmation as to the state of the cyclist?

If the cyclist had non-fatal injuries as the twitter from Statesman indicated, would the police still draw the outline around the bicycle with spray paint? That's what I saw when I drove by the scene this morning. The victim was gone, so I don't know how badly he was injured. I was assuming by what the police were doing, that it was a fatality. I hope the cyclist is ok. I could not find anything in the news on this either.

... it doesn't automatically mean he was dead. Sure, when you see it on the TV, that's what it usually means, but this isn't TV.

police don't usually waste their time drawing the outlines unless it was fatality. It's a fair assumption. However, if they had no other pressing issues, I guess they would document the skid marks of the car and location of the struck bike (which is what they did) for the impending court case, whether or not the victim survived. Victim survives, court action pursued by victim. Victim does not survive, court action pursued by surviving family.

As for the description (from Jason) above: it looked to me like the car in the left of traffic heading east on McNeil toward Parmer that stuck the biker had slammed on the brakes quite a bit of distance from the biker who was crossing McNeil in what I thought was a northerly direction from Research Park (by the position and direction of bike). Obviously can't tell if car was running red light or if biker was crossing road when McNeil traffic had green light. Speed limit is 45 in that area and I notice some drivers going 50 or so quite often on that stretch.

Also, the post by the Statesman, http://twitter.com/statesman/statuses/2196499875 says victim was taken to Brackenridge. I don't think the Statesman staff was referring to the same accident: Brackenridge is no where near the scene of the accident and is certainly not the closest hospital.

i feel like if i ever get taken out bad by a car it's gonna be someone who assumes i'm going 5 mph and/or doesn't pay attention to me and tries to turn left across my lane. that shit sucks.

TexBIKE/aus Via Twitter, the Statesman responded to a TexBIKE query about a cyclist injured on McNeil Drive this morning, tweeting that the cyclist was taken to Brackenridge w/non life-threatening injuries. http://tbik.org/Wdgwj

@TexBIKE_ce All we know is that EMS took a cyclist, who was hit by a car, to Brackenridge - he has non life-threatening injuries.
