Powder Coating around town?
Tags
So I'm building a bike for a friend of mine, on his budget! So it's time for the powdercoating. A few questions:
1. where is the best place to get it done? Considering the most important balance: quality and cheapness
2. What other bits can i get powder coated? crank arms, stem, handlebars, seat post?
3. I heard that if you get a bunch of shit coated the same color at the same time, it's cheaper over all, or even free for the other stuff. So if I threw a bunch of frames to be done as well, i could kill many many birds with the same color stone.
4. Cost?
thanks dudes,
Grizzly
I know the Willits guys down south were running a powder coating special recently. Don't quote me, but I believe it was $85 for frame and fork, which is a screaming deal especially because these guys custom-build frames, and actually have bicycle-specific gear for powdercoating, as opposed to it being a car body place that paints bicycles as an aside.
All of the parts you mentioned above CAN be powdercoated, but you have to be careful because powdercoating builds up a layer on top of the metal, which I could see causing problems for seatposts, quill stems, and other very tight clearance parts. I've seen plenty cranks and bars powdercoated though, so I don't think it'd be too much of a problem.
Keep an eye out on Craigslist, as there are occasionally very reasonable powder coating specials posted there. Call them up, ask the questions you posted above, and see what the pros say.
