Fuck you Perry. You just vetoed a bill thats only purpose is saving lives and protecting those whos vehicles don't afford them the same protection as a two ton pickup truck. You're an asshole, Governor Hairdo, and I hope next time you're riding without your security detail some redneck in a truck...

I'd better stop there. Don't want to get myself in TOO much trouble. BikeTexas has up-to-the-minute news on the issue, as well as that asshole's response to why he killed the bill. Fuck this pisses me off. His main argument is summed up in the following statement:

While I am in favor of measures that make our roads safer for everyone, this bill contradicts much of the current statute and places the liability and responsibility on the operator of a motor vehicle when encountering one of these vulnerable road users. In addition, an operator of a motor vehicle is already subject to penalties when he or she is at fault for causing a collision or operating recklessly, whether it is against a “vulnerable user” or not.

We've seen what those "penalties" are. Typically, the police don't issue a citation or even bother to take the drivers' information down, even when it results in the cyclist going to the hospital, or worse. I've seen first-hand how often the current laws let offenders slide when it comes to a car vs. bike collision, and I still have scars to show for it. All I've gotta say about this is FUCK YOU PERRY. You had the opportunity to do something right and true to form you screwed it up. Now if you'd be so kind as to go choke on that entire bag of dicks you profess you don't suck due to party affiliation and pressure from the religious right.

Update:I wonder if this is payback for that un-named cyclist that burned down the mansion a little while back...

The thing that really pours salt on the wound is reading the user comments at the end of the article. I really don't understand how people allow themselves to formulate these views... and the number of people who clicked those little "thumbs up" icons shows that it ain't too uncommon of a way to think...

Issuing traffic citations to cyclists who "flip off" motorists who honk when they "ride too far into the road"?

Requiring bicycles to be register with the city in order to use traffic ways?

This is, in my opinion, heresy. It seems like more people than I realized have serious hard-ons for cyclists in this city (as if getting shit thrown at you, and constantly being yelled obscenities at wasn't enough), and are letting off steam in whatever ways they can find.

PS: numberone you should think about monitoring your posts before advocating things like clipping cyclists on a bike message board. Your posts are (consistently) seriously fucking abraisive.

look for something on KVUE tonite, they came into MJ's and interviewed some of us for it.

PPS

read the article on KVUE followed by a bunch of idiots and their word vomit of stupidity....

If this law is such a burden on automobile drivers, then I guess we should just rescind the law passed in the last couple of years that requires drivers to slow down or change lanes when an officer has somebody pulled over on the side of the highway. By Dick Perry's logic there are already laws and penalties on the books to cover such situations. Rick Perry is suck a cock that even Kay Bailey Hutchinson is looking good these days...

is taking the full lane on EVERY road that does not have a proper bike lane. no matter what.

also, anyone who has ever ridden on guad during rush hour can attest to the fact that riding in the far right of the lane is DUMB because not only is the street HORRIBLE over there, but you also have to stop every 20 ft for a bus.

Take the full lane. Always. It's our right as a moving vehicle.

I'm not bummed this got vetoed. traffic is bad enough in this town, and this bill would have made it worse. theres no need for one person on a bike to be allowed to take up an entire lane of guadalupe or lamar or any other busy road. This bill wouldnt have been a solution to anything it would have made the current situation in our city worse. Maybe this would have worked in Dallas or houston but I wouldnt know, maybe a few of ya'll can go back home and find out. That would probably help the situation here more than a safe passing bill would.
I cant stand seeing a biker riding down a busy road taking up an entire lane with a whole line of pissed off cars behind them. There is just no need, take a different route or get on the fucking side walk. contrary to what a lot of bikers think, you CAN ride on the sidewalks in austin with the exception of a few. If this bill would have passed we would have a bunch of people riding there bikes where they really shouldnt be in the first place and feeling mildly safe about it because the car isnt supposed to buzz them now. FUCK THAT!!! If your an arrogant douchebag and feel like you can take up an entire lane and cause even worse traffic congestion then you deserve to get buzzed, hell I think you deserve to get clipped. I dont give a fuck about a safe passing bill.

fixed gears are like butt holes, every one has one.

I hate to admit this but any time someone even mentions the sidewalk as a viable option for bicycles, I sort of disregard their opinion. I ain't about to run down some momma and her kid or someone walking their dog. Anyway, with the drivers in this town, even if you should be taking the lane for everyone's safety, the likelihood is that the driver will get pissed and pull a dangerous pass move in the opposite facing traffic lane. I'm pretty sure the only group of cyclists "arrogant" enough to grab entire lanes is critical mass or the moon cruise or the thursday night ride.

Dear Number One.....

Please FUCK OFF.....Sincerely Yours,EARTH.

One person on a bike is already allowed to take up an entire lane of Guadalupe or Lamar or just about any other busy road, as long as the outside lane is less than 14' wide -- and most are. This bill would have had no effect on that either way. And unless the lane is extra wide or has a shoulder or bike lane, usually taking the entire lane IS the safest way to ride it -- sticking to the far right invites motorists to pass you, often with only a few inches to spare. This doesn't mean you shouldn't let people pass you when appropriate, but it's safest when done on your terms, not theirs.

And ironically, Guadalupe is one of the few roads where you're not allowed to ride on the sidewalk for a significant stretch of it.

And the bill was also for the entire state -- not just Austin. So it would include Dallas and Houston.

Have you read the bill? Are you familiar with the existing laws regarding bicycles?

Bill or not, if you're passing a bike, you should give them at least three feet of space. Hell, if you're passing a car or motorcycle you should give them at least three feet of space too. This isn't some sort of new, unreasonable idea -- it's common courtesy and safety.

The best argument against the bill is that most of the things it makes illegal are already made illegal by other laws -- but the bill does nicely clarify things. It's not perfect (especially section (i)) but it's a good start.

It's unfortunate that common courtesy and safety have to be codified into the laws, but that's life.

I think the next logical step here would be to take it local. We've got the city council to do it, and it would be a finger to the Perry in true form. His own city of residence passed a law he saw unfit for the entire state? Priceless.

Erik

that he would be true to form, then what are you pissed about? According to your own logic, Perry did exactly what you expected.

I didn't KNOW he was going to fuck it up, I only expected him to. Honestly I was pissed at Hairdo before he vetoed this bill, so technically I'm STILL pissed at that asshole. Quit trying to ascribe logic to my diatribes.

While this definitely sucks I never really saw the 3' passing bill as really doing that much for cyclists. The same people that would have enforced the 3' passing law are the same ones that don't bother to take down driver information. And if they're not getting this when there's a wreck why would they bother to go out of their way to pull someone over?

I would have loved for it to pass...but at this point the problem is enforcement...not the laws.

I agree that law enforcement education and instruction on the prevention of bias would go a LONG way towards ensuring that more motorists (or cyclists) are ticketed in a traffic altercation when they're at fault, but I still think a law specifically protecting more vulnerable users on the road with additional penalties for offenders would, if enforced, help curb that behavior and maybe make drivers think twice about breezing a cyclist.

Maybe y'all are right and we don't need more laws, we just need more fair enforcement of the ones we have. I still like seeing a law that asserts a pedestrian/cyclist/equestrian's right to safe passage in a world that caters to the automobile.

Just saw this story on the front page of rawstory.com...just wanted to say that....also, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WORK THAT YOU DO,HOMIE.......wouldn't know 'bout half the rides that go down without this site........

BTW.....Did you know that "Rick Perry" is Swedish for "takes a bukkake from a pack sexually frustrated bears"?
