Cyclist victim of a hit-and-run over the weekend
I was just sent the following account of a hit-and-run accident that happened over the weekend up in my neighborhood, forwarded to me by Andrew, a friend of the victim:
Last Saturday my friend Jon was riding his bike around Airport and Lamar when he was clipped from behind by a car, thrown off his bike, and knocked unconscious for a short period of time. Because of this, he was unable to see the make, model, or color of the car. There were no witnesses, as it happened around 2:30 AM, which strongly increases the chance that the driver was drunk. He luckily suffered little serious injury (just some nasty strawberries) and broke no bones, but is still in a great deal of pain. He was riding to a friend's house, and was not very far away, so he was able to get a ride back to his house. He spent no time in the hospital, and the police were not notified.
Just thought I would let you know of another one of these hit-and-run instances against cyclists -- the whole thing makes me sick.
I'm so glad to hear that this wasn't worse, as is oftentimes the case in an automobile vs. bicycle collision. Hope you heal up quick, Jon.
Be safe out there y'all. All this discussion about fines, tickets, stopping, running, right, wrong, etc is all secondary to the issue of personal safety. Do what you need to do to not get hit, because when that happens WE LOSE. If it's dark make sure you have lights on your bike, always check your 6, never pass on the right, and if there's a car coming, for the love of god STOP. It's not a matter of right and wrong, it's a matter of physics. I really don't want to have to post one of these about any of my friends. Ride on!
I have been seeing a lot of folks riding bikes lately across the Lamar St. bridge and on Lamar in general... while it's their legal right to do so, it's asking for trouble. I urge bicyclists to stay the hell away from busy streets like these... not quite right or fair, but safer.

... at least open a report (Jon, that is.)
They might pull over somebody with unexplained damage to their car, or a witness might contact them saying that they saw somebody hit a cyclist ...
It's a long shot, but occasionally all the pieces do fall into the police's lap and then they'll take credit for solving another crime.
