Very interesting video about holding NYPD accountable for their violence against cyclists
This is a very interesting 12-minute video about holding the police in NYC responsible for their violent actions towards cyclists. This seems very poignant this week in light of last Friday's Critical Mass. I'm very upset by what went down this last week but I don't want this to be something that kills the momentum the rides have been gathering lately. I do not want to bow to their brutal, thug-like tactics. If we do then they've won. Please watch the video and if you were there last week let me know what you think the Police-involvement means for the future of Critical Mass in Austin. Obviously it's survived police intimidation and arrests in the past or we wouldn't be riding it, but the arrest and ticketing of two cyclists is something I hadn't seen in my history with the local rides.
I've seen one of the local videos of last Friday's ride and it shows the police brandishing nightsticks, pushing and shoving cyclists, and trying to intimidate the civilians and the cameraman throughout the video. Oftentimes the officers would not give their badge numbers or names when it was requested of them, and they never once told the arrestee what he was being hand-cuffed and put in a squad car for. Unfortunately I don't think anyone actually recorded the police officer tackling the cyclist from his bicycle, but there were plenty of eye witnesses to this ridiculous example of unchecked aggression. This isn't right, these are the tactics of a police state. They didn't treat us like citizens, they treated us like threats. Let me know what y'all think.
