Urban Outfitter: Now selling custom bikes, WTF

I'm sorry, this is fucking bullshit. I am all for riding bikes and getting them pimped the F out, but seriously? So for any of you too cool for school d**ks and c**ts, have at it. LAME.

The Bike Snob has a few things to say about the Republic/Urban Outfitter bikes. (about halfway down the blog post)

I agree with Jason, but I also hope that this helps kill the fixed trend that has taken over the bike scene.

I've seen these. The bikes you're talking about are re-branded Republic Bikes, with crappy components and a frame made of hi-ten steel. They weigh about 25lbs out the door and can be yours in custom colors for $399. Honestly I don't mind it, and it reminds me of the 10-speed (called this even if it had more or less) craze my parents succumbed to. When the gas crisis hit in the 70s everybody bought a cheap road bike from Schwinn, Peugeot, Roland, or any number of places selling inexpensive, heavy, crappy 10-speeds. Unlike their friends who left their 10-speeds to rot in the garage, my parents found that they loved bikes, upgraded their, and still occasionally ride today.

I hope these are the stepping stones for the upcoming generation of cyclists. If they realize the shortcomings of the bike yet still experience the joy of riding it, maybe they'll upgrade to something nicer. Maybe they'll ride the bike into the ground. At least it gets their feet on the pedals.
