I just saw the following story posted to The Blotter yesterday afternoon, about a hit-and-run incident last Tuesday:

Police: Driver charged after hit and run of cyclist

By Andrea Lorenz | Thursday, July 23, 2009, 04:54 PM

An Austin man, Gregory Feazell, was charged with failure to stop and render aid, a third-degree felony, after police say he hit a cyclist Tuesday evening on Brodie Lane near William Cannon Drive.

A witness told police the driver of a PT Cruiser hit a cyclist near the H-E-B at 6900 Brodie Lane. The cyclist flew over the top of the car and rolled onto the street, according to the arrest warrant.

Police say Feazell, 26, left the scene for a nearby apartment complex, where police found him. According to arrest documents, Feazell told police he had returned home to tell his mother what happened and that he had had no phone service at the scene of the crash.

The cyclist, Ross Clurman, told police he was within a few inches to the curb - as close as he could get - when he was hit. Clurman said the driver got out of his car and asked him if he was alright, according to police. Clurman responded, “What do you think?”

Clurman was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with complaints of pain in his neck and back, according to the documents.

WOW. I'm awestruck y'all. The cops are starting to take note and look out for us. Two years ago when I was clipped and the driver ran I called the cops and they didn't even take an incident report because they said it'd be impossible to prove anything. Now they're arresting people on FELONY charges for hitting cyclists and leaving the scene of the collision. FREAKING AWESOME, THANK YOU APD!

just fyi...I contacted the guy who got hit....he said he's doing OK and thinks everything will work out with insurance and such.

well I don't want to pat them on the back too much yo...my city is being taken over by gangs and thieves more and more every day...I'm calling for art acevedo to resign and go back to cali or where ever...

who knows what apd would have done if not for the witness phoning in the accident. how many times have accidents been ignored bc there were no witnesses? if anyone can find out his/her name, that person deserves some sort of civic award or 12 pack.

If you really count all the haters on statesman.com and kvue.com though, I bet there are under 1000 total douchebag drivers - I mean really into being an ass on the road. Most people are neutral or don't care on the whole - being a dbag on a daily basis is bad for the blood pressure, I think. You need to spend time getting mad over stuff that doesn't matter at all.

too bad i didn't think to give an award via the Chronicle's "Best of Austin" to those statesmen/kvue haters.

"Best of Austin Douchebags: The forum lurkers of statesman.com and kvue.com"

Ah, I can just see how appreciate they would be. it must be hard work being a DB and shortening your lifespan and raising your blood pressure more and more everyday by spewing hate.

these people must not get laid :)

... that all these haters in the KVUE comments are Internet tough guys (and I'll bet they're mostly guys) but on the road they just drive like everybody else. Cars may distance people from the outside world to a degree, making them more bold and less polite, but the Internet does it even more. Perhaps more motorists than we're aware of don't like us, but they drive appropriately anyways?

Most drivers are sufficiently nice to cyclists -- they may not know exactly how to deal with bicycles in traffic, but they give us enough room that it all works out. They might not like having a slower vehicle in front of them, but they wait for it to be safe to pass and then they pass. And they don't do overtly hostile things like lay on the horn or run the bike off the road or throw things and such. It's the exceptions that really stick out.

Am I the only one who has problems commenting on KVUE's site? I click on `Submit' and the button grays and it just hangs there and my comment never appears. Perhaps their site just doesn't like Firefox and/or Linux?

Firefox / Windoze

I try to remember virtually all of the thousands of cars that pass me on the road each week have no problem sharing the road. They pass me with plenty of room, don't honk or throw stuff, and in general behave exactly the way they should.

It's the ones that don't that stick out in your memory, though.

So true - it goes the same both ways. I've been trying to write down positive experiences I've had with drivers lately after I get home so I remember for every douche who honks or doesn't obey basic traffic rules, there are 2-3 people who say hi or let you go first at the stop sign.

yeah, the idiots and haters on there are the same morons that purposely run cyclists off the road, honk while they are passing in another lane or throw shit and yell at us. hmmm, for once i would love to turn the tables on them, but at the same time, i would rather be on my bike anyday. anytime i'm in my car and i see a cyclist, i get a little jealous. i won't stop riding because some lazyass wants to run me over. besides, my health will far exceed theirs anyday, not to mention my happiness.
