Strange things are afoot at the Circle ATX, thanks to BFF...
There's a WHOLE SHITLOAD of good stuff just on the horizon. Critical Mass in 8 hours, the Waller Creek Tour on Saturday, a really early Sunday ride, an all-ages YBP fundraiser, and then it's on to the shows, premieres, movies, races, tournaments and after-parties that make up the Austin Bike Film Festival schedule. I talked to one of the organizers last night at the Social Ride and she saying that the festival passes are selling like mad, so if you want to see as much of the BFF as humanly possible, save yourself a bunch of cheddar and just buy one of them before they're gone.
The BFF's been doing a lot of great things to support the bike scenes of the various cities they've been touring through, and Austin is no different. Beyond holding a Fundraiser for Yellow Bike they're working with the local rides and blogs to give free passes to local riders, and are organizing with the clubs and riding groups in town to facilitate races, a bike polo tournament, an art show, and a really really excellent sounding BFF kick-off party featuring not just one but TWO popular (hey, the kids love 'em) local bands:
Tickets are only $15, but if you can't swing that and didn't make it to the social ride last night where they passed out 5 free pairs, you should cruise on over to A2W and take part in their free ticket giveaway. All you gotta do is answer a few simple questions about the local bike scene. If you're a reader of either ATXBS or A2W or regularly participate in the group rides, you shouldn't have too much trouble answering their trivia questions.
Last night when talking to Jeanette we discussed the Full Moon Cruise that's going on immediately after the show, and figured it'd be fun to grab all the bikers from La Zona Rosa and cruise over to meet up with the Full Moon riders on the bridge. Since the show ends at midnight(ish) and the ride leaves at 12:30(ish), that shouldn't be too hard to arrange. Talk about fortuitous timing, as you have NO IDEA how hard it is to re-schedule the full moon...
I've been really impressed by the level of coordination and organization that has gone into the making of the 2009 Austin Bicycle Film Festival. Almost ALL the major weekly (and monthly) events have coordinated with the BFF people to ride to or from one of their shows or parties, the polo club is throwing a 2-day tournament, THREE races are being organized to run in tandem and intersect at various checkpoints (woah), ALL my favorite biker bars are hosting afterparties (Jackelope, Creekside, Scoot, I love you), it just boggles the mind. I'm really looking forward to see how the next week and a half goes, but if it's anything like the lead-up to the BFF, I expect greatness, unforgettable times, and lots and lots of drunken debauchery. See y'all everywhere, this is gonna be fun.
It's a great time to be a cyclist in Austin!
thanks to all the 'behind the scensters!'
i can't wait too!
