27th Annual Moonlight Cruze - It's ON, it's in SEPTEMBER, get ready to RIDE!
REAL DEAL UPDATE: First of, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Eric, you've just cleared up a big mystery that has been troubling MANY of us newcomers to the Austin bike community for a good while now. The reason I'm thanking Eric so profusely is that in the past 3 weeks I've been BOMBARDED with questions on the correct date of the Annual Moonlight Cruze. There's been a good bit of discussion on the correct date in the comments section and in person, but no one's known the real deal, until now:
Here's the real deal on the Real Annual Austin Moonlight Cruze:
Back in the day (27 years ago) the Cruze got started by Lynn Carter and the old Austin Cruzer Bike Shop that was located on 34th street between what are now Salvation Pizza and Food Heads. It was officially sponsored by the shop, with registration, maps, and everything. The shop stopped sponsoring the ride one year after a rider was hit and killed by a driver on his way home afterwards.
Previous to that, the date was always the Sunday following the September full moon. It never had anything to do with the Harvest Moon. The year after the accident, with no official leader or sponsor, we all showed up at the usual spot, at the usual time, and found a pile of route maps waiting for us on the pavement. So we did the ride, and have continued to do so on the same route every year on the Sunday after the full moon in September. Following that formula puts this years ride on September 6. I contacted "the guy who puts out the flyers" and got confirmation from him (though he said he hasn't made any flyers yet).
Every few years someone would come off the Annual Cruze and say "we should do this every month!" and it would go for a while and fizzle out. That is until a few years ago, when the monthly full moon ride took hold and never let go. Somewhere along the line there was a crossing of the streams, and someone erroneously dubbed the Annual Austin Moonlight Cruze the Harvest Moon Cruise. It may coincide with the harvest moon sometimes, but that has never determined the date of the original event.
So spread the word: The 27th Annual Austin Moonlight Cruze will start from the Pfluger Bridge at 2:00 am Sunday September 6, 2009!
Thats the word folks. You've got a week to prepare, and I better get to work on Frankenstereo 3000! Thank you again Eric for this timeline of my favorite annual ride in town, the Moonlight Cruze! I can't wait.
UPDATE: This is the INCORRECT DATE for the cruise, according to Doug and Bob. It's supposed to happen October 4th, so keep an eye out for that.
Blahblahblah, the official word hasn't released yet, but their dating scheme is to pick the closest Saturday night (technically Sunday morning) to the full moon and ride at 2am. I'll post more as the flyers leak, but as I don't know who puts them up or distributes that shit, I'll be keeping an eye out at bike shops, same as y'all.
This is the big one, folks. I've seen over 600 people ride this thing, tons of bike stereos, weird bikes, light displays, this is the time of year when the local freak bikers pull out all the stops and go nuts. Start getting amped. Here's last years details, to give you an idea of what to look out for.
I can't recall The Full Moon Cruise not being on a UT game weekend.
Let's see all the Cook Bros, KOS, Firemans, OMs, Kappas, and other looptail 26's out en masse, y'all. That's what got this thing started in the first place. 1980s old schoolers, represent!
Not the Kos. The Cook is too dear to me to abuse it the way I want to ride. The OM Flyer would be a blast, but the Orange and White Fireman's TEXAS Cruzer will be joining me for its very first ever Annual Austin Moonlight Cruuuuuuuuze!!!!!
Yee-Haw!
Ok Erick now you're just bragging! If I had even HALF the old school cruisers you do, well, then I'd be a bike thief wouldn't I?
Maybe I should throw some BMX bars on the 1x1 and fake it for a night.

here we go
The "Full Harvest Moon" is actually October 4th this year at 2:11am according to the Old Farmer's Almanac:

I believe you're just a month early. Although, I know we'd all like it to be here already. It's friggin' hot.

A harvest moon is the full moon that appears nearest to the autumnal equinox.
The 2009 Autumn equinox is at Sep 22 21:18 UTC.
The nearest full moons are Sep 4 16:05 UTC and Oct 4 06:11 UTC.
So that would be about 18 days different or about 13 days different ... I think it's Oct 4th. And since the ride is the nearest Saturday, that would make it October 3rd (or October 4th 2 am.)
On the bright side, Sep 4th is a friday, which makes it easier for many of those working folks to attend the usual full moon cruise on that day.
I believe Doug is right about the traditional time and date. Sunday morning 4 Oct 2009 at 2AM. (think Saturday night, y'all)
Downside: (For me at least) It's also ACL Fest weekend and most of my friends pedicab. We'll be riding for big $ at that time.
Upside: The ride will begin Sunday at 2:00 AM right after the moon has just reached it's fullest at 1:11 AM local.
Saturday promises be the best night of the year to pedicab. It'll be interesting to see y'all rockin' it downtown on Saturday night. Make some noise.
Eric (wheelieman) just sent me some quality info on the history and timing of the Moonlight Cruze. We're riding September the 6th at 2am.
yes. september is when it goes down. It seems early, but it's always been september.
You know, ther'll be one next month regardless, on the weekend even, so drink a coulple extra hours this month, and it's cooler at 2am in september anyway. September, September, September. 27 years.
When I was riding around 6th street in the group some guy tried to knock me off my bike then succeeded in knocking a girl (I believe) clean off her bike and then he didn't even stop to help or see if she was alright, he just ran off.
Did anyone else see that?
If anybody had seen that, it shoulda been on! fucking with anybody like that is grounds for a bitch slap, but a female? fucked up!
