Bike Polo Finals - RESULTS!
Holy shit at bike polo tournament was INTENSE! I expect to see some serious progession in the local games after the Austin crew saw what the other cities teams brought to the table. Our locals still held their own, taking 3rd, 4th and tying for 5th place. Here were the prize-winning places when the dust settled:
1st - Jumbo Cookie - Pensacola/Mobile/New Orleans
2nd - Squid Ink - New Orleans/DC
3rd - Hammerhead - Austin (Cyrus, Miguel, Owen)
4th - Backstabbers - Austin (Israel, Chris, KC)
5th (tied) - You Shut your Fat Whore Mouth - Austin (Ben, Dan, Jordan)
5th (tied) - Brolo - Baton Rouge
The visiting Floridians and Louisianans really cranked up the intensity of the games, and I was very glad to see them both in the finals. One player particularly threw his weight around and got down and dirty on the court, snagging peoples' wheels with his mallet, playing after footdown, and even sending one of the other players into the pole with a well-timed shove! It was interesting to see how serious some people took the games. It seemed like the local teams were real chill in comparison, but that may just be my stilted Austinite perspective. Despite a few (or more than a few) choice words on the field everybody had a BLAST, both on the court and watching from the sidelines. Robert organized a hell of a tournament, so if you see him out and about be sure to buy him a beer and tell him thanks. After this I've decided I need to build my own mallet and try to throw together a team. Maybe play the next tourney. Great stuff, y'all!
Time to book it back down to the after-party to celebrate another successful Austin Bicycle Film Festival. If you see Jillian, Jeanette, Brian or Brendt at the bar, make sure to buy them a good beer.
Robert -
That was cool.....kinda wish I had the guts to battle forth with ya'll! Excellent event, and I can olny see it getting bigger and more gooder!
I really enjoyed hanging with the crowd - cheering, chating and being entertained!

why coast? - when you can pedal!
Jason,
That sums it up PRETTY DAMN WELL!! I had a blast. I can't wait for local shops and individuals to start putting together permanent teams. I think that is one way for Austin to progress in polo. Just imagine, instead of a social club, we'll have a full fledged city league with a season etc. Maybe one day, local high schools will be playing polo after school as well a football, soccer, etc..
Food for thought. See you all on the court,

High school bike jocks that carry mallets? Awesome. And I thought the football players were bad enough...
Jumbo Cookiez was a mixed team of Pensacola, Fl., Mobile, Al, and New Orleans, La.
I had a blast this weekend, hope you guys did too and please come out and play some more polo, I too expect to see the level of play step up a lot... thanks for coming out Jason and everyone else!
