REALLY rough crash in the 4/5s at The Driveway last night...

I received a rather chilling email last night that I wanted to share with everybody. Last night at the Thursday Night Driveway Crits a rider in the 4/5 race touched wheels with another cyclist and suffered a rather injurious head-first crash. Read on for more details and where to look for updates:

Hi Jason,
Thought you would want to know that tonight at the track there was a major accident. I did not see it but had friends in the pelaton that witnessed the wreck and the aftermath. You will probably know more folks that can give specifics but we were told that the rider has major facial injuries, broken collar bone and possible/probable skull fracture and lots of blood loss. He was unconscious most of the time before he left in the ambulance.
I sure hope the guy is going to be fine. People seemed rattled out there tonight. Chris

The fellow injured was a cyclist named Kevin Underhill, who races rides (sorry 'bout that LTC) with LTC. He's currently at Brackenridge ER. If you want updates on his condition, please check the TXBRA Road race forums. His team blog has a writeup about Kevin and the accident that goes into a little more detail as to what happened. He's still in the ICU according to the TXBRA updates, so please keep Kevin in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from this horrifying accident.

I was pretty close to him when it happened. Like, close enough to ruin a tire locking up my brakes to avoid him. All I saw was the guy turning sideways, then going down face-first. We were on a straightaway, and had just come off a downhill, so we were probably going somewhere in the neighborhood of 30+ mph.

The next lap around, the guy was in the same position, still face-down. Shortly thereafter, the officials called the race and ordered us off the course.

There have been periodic updates on TXBRA as to the guy's condition, if you check there on the TX Road Racing forum.
