Collision at Barton Springs and Robert E. Lee, cyclist injured
Update: Here's another report from an eye witness that works nearby. Sounds pretty gnarly:
the accident at barton springs and robert e lee was a pedestrian that was hit by a car. some guys i work with witnessed it and stopped to help, i rode by on my lunch break a bit later and saw him being loaded into an ambulance. ems took him to the hospital with a big gash on his face but he was concious and talking. apparently he was crossing at a cross walk about a block east of r.e.l. on barton springs, the car in the first lane stopped but the lady in the second didn't see him. there's no light there and i think he wasn't watching for that second car.
I know the spot, and it can be pretty hectic for bikes to cross during traffic. Though cars are supposed to obey the crosswalk, when traffic is thick it becomes more of a suggestion than a rule. I hope the cyclist was ok, and that the officials on the scene make sure his rights are looked after. Thanks for the update Jenny.
I was just sent this on-the-scene accident report from a reader named Eric:
Just saw aftermath of bike vs car accident. Barton springs near Robert e lee. Broken windshield, cyclist conscious and seated, lots of blood. EMS on scene. Hope dude is ok.
If anyone has any additional information on this one, please let me know. That intersection (really that entire stretch of Barton Springs) is BRUTAL on cyclists. Cars are hauling ass to get on or off the highway, traffic narrows at the light, bike lanes appear and disappear just as quickly, and oftentimes the vulnerable user gets the short end of the stick. Please be careful out there y'all.
