An announcement on today's City Council meeting, and a PSA.
Update: This message (from the same person) casts some doubt on what we'd heard previously:
Unoffocial minutes retrieved...

Can anyone from the city or who went down there confirm or deny this? If this is the case I'm very happy, and look forward to working with the City Council to craft a workable ordinance that isn't written too vaguely.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like Item 55 has been pulled from today's City Council agenda:
Hey
Down at city hall... The pulled the item.

Damn, that's not a good thing to hear. If anybody wants to know why a law banning texting in cars (and on bikes) might be a good idea, please watch the following PSA from England:
Certainly drives the point home. I'll let y'all know when I find out why the item was removed and when it'll be rescheduled.
holy crap! that video is crazy. i mean, it could be about eating dougnuts in the car and it wouldn't matter so long as you put that much graphic violence in it. one thing for sure... it illustrates how dangerous vehicles in general are and how often this is forgotten. just another reason to pass laws that ensure the safety of non-vehicles on and around the roads.

Just saw the update. ZOMG!
I'm getting so fed up with the anti-bike movement in Austin. It doesn't make any sense why safe behavior would be discouraged. Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous thing someone behind a wheel can do. And why are pedestrians and bikers not worth protecting on the road? Because we have the nerve to go where cars can't? Because we can pass up rush hour traffic while you're stuck there in a cage? They're so damn bitter about bad Austin traffic and want to take us down with it.
it sucks everyone is so love with their cars here. i will trade my car for its worth in bikes any day!
