Social Cycling ATX Presents: Thursday Night Social Ride - 6 month anniversary!
I bumped into Keith late last night at a party and he said that he'd gotten the notice for this weeks Thursday Night Social Ride posted. Once again he's mixing it up a bit, taking us to some new spots and ending us at a newish 6th Street bar where they'll have FOUR KEGS of Lonestar waiting for us, as well as a DJ spinning some crazy shit. Here's the official word:
It's almost Thursday night again, Social Cyclists. Time for some more riding, socializing and having fun. It's hard to believe that this week is the SIX MONTH ANNIVERSARY of the Thursday Night Social Ride. Time definitely does fly. We're working on some great ideas for the future of the Social RIde. A bit of which you can read about down below.
Also, you guys made the Statesman on Monday so I expect to see some new faces on the ride. Here's the article:

We are meeting, as usual, at the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge at 7:30pm then taking off at 8 for a nice leisurely cruise through the east side. We'll be stopping a couple of times to hang out, play some games and have some fun. After we have have our fill of riding our bikes around and chilling at some parks, we will roll into downtown where the Chupacabra, a really cool new bar on 6th street, is rolling out 4 kegs of iced cold Lonestar beer and treating us to a dance party with DJ Yoshi Fuerte at the turntable. If you guys take care of all of that beer and are still thirsty from dancing, cold tecates will be a buck. The Chupacabra is a killer new tequila bar with so many different brands, even I haven't tried some of them. And if you know me, that's saying something.
For all of you new riders, here is how we ride. We obey traffic laws as best we can. We stay to the right, take up one lane, let cars pass and stop at red lights. Sure it seems stupid to wait at a light in downtown when there are no cars coming, but think of this as time to socialize with your fellow cyclists, or break into an impromptu dance party until the light changes to green. Also, WE RIDE RAIN OR SHINE!
You will need to bring lights, a lock, some water and an ID if you plan to attend the after party.
Social Cycling ATX is looking for some help. You guys have made this thing a massively successful weekly ride. There are only a handful of weekly rides in the whole world that match what we do. Kudos to each and every one of you for making the ride what it is today,
If you are interest in leading a group, planning routes, or just want to lend a hand in general, please email me at helpout@socialcyclingatx.com.
If you have any suggestions on where to take the ride, or you are a dj or band that would like to play for 300 friendly and sweaty cyclists. Or if you just want to comment (good or bad) please email me at yo@socialcyclingatx.com.
Also, I want to announce that Social Cycling ATX is having a T-shirt design contest. We will be taking submissions our first t-shirt design. There will be a prize for the winner as well as an art show to display our rider's submissions. More details to come, but get ready for a Thursday Night Social Ride t-shirt that you will be able to rock on Thursdays or any other day of the week.
And my last order of business is to ask ya'll to upload your photos of the ride to the Social Cycling ATX facebook page. Tons of people take photos on the ride. Share them with us and your fellow Social Cyclists!
See ya'll at the bridge!
Wow, soliciting assistance from the riders, opening a comment box, and starting a T-Shirt design contest? Talk about a ride of the people, by the people, and for the people. Plus, it's been 6 months? ALREADY?!? It seemed like just the other day there were maybe 40-50 people on this ride, taking us down bum trails, and I thought if I rode another sidewalk I was going to commit biker on biker violence. Now fast forward to today; the ride is the talk of the town, 300+ strong, admonishing its' participants to cycle safely, look out for each other, and be mindful of the car traffic around us. It's definitely different from a lot of the other big group rides in town, but in this case different is good. See y'all out there around 7:30.
It's the playlist.

Awwww, I fondly remember the ride when folks bitched about the sidewalk... and I bitched right back. :P It was a mindset leftover from the previous rides where there weren't enough of us to feel safe on Lamar. (And I still won't ride on that street on smaller rides!) Thankfully Keith came along and wrangled us into shape.
(Man, but I do miss the Draughthouse!)
Tonight's gonna be HUGE! :D
I miss the Draughthouse too!!!! That was my first ride, and yeah, it was still relatively small back then, hence the sidewalk (which I still use on my commute home). One night a few us us ditched Jackalope and went on to the Draughthouse anyway...hmmm...since we are splitting into smaller groups now.....
Nobody on this ride better complain about the music...I hope that was only the Full Moon Cruze.
Oh just you wait. I've been on this serious Bathory kick lately, if this keeps up I may subject the ride to Nordland I in its' entirety. Then you'll hear some complaining...
The music hasn't been an issue for me on the Social Rides, but man, was my head hurting Sunday. If it's so loud I cannot talk to the person riding next to me, I'll try not to hesitate in letting the stereo'er know.
