sharing the lane vs. splitting the lane

I swear to god, if one more apd officer pulls me over to tell me im not allowed to pass between cars im going to unleash such a shit storm on the guy that it will take months for friends and family to raise enough money to bail me out.

"Sharing the lane" is when a car and a bicycle are on the same parallel of the same lane at the same time. it should not, excuse me, it does not matter who is passing who. we are told to ride to the right side of the road but this rule is under the assumption that we are moving slower than motor traffic. when you are moving faster than cars the only safe place to pass is on the left where a car will not unexpectedly pull into a parking spot, driveway, etc. as you are passing. this is the same way cars are expected to pass each other on the highway. i feel the safest when i am squeezing between rows of cars whether or not they are stopped or moving, because even if they dont see the bike next to them they see the car next to them and thus stay in their lane. the only thing that should even be considered questionable would be splitting the double yellow lines between oncoming and forward moving traffic.

One of my biggest pet-peeves is when i see a cyclist stopped at a red light directly behind the car stopped farthest back from the light. did you know: the most common type of car on car collision is a moving car rear-ending a stopped car at a red light? even if you enjoy sucking on tailpipes why would you put yourself in that most dangerous situation? what would typically be a fender bender with, at worst, a mild cases of whiplash for a motorist means amputated legs and/or paralysis for us.

cops constantly tell me that [cyclists] need to decide if we want to be treated like cars or treated like pedestrians, and if we want to ride in the road we have to adhere to all the same rules as cars to the letter. we are not cars and we should not be treated as such. roads were not made solely for cars and/or those who wish to be treated like cars. cyclists invented paved roads. we deserve our own separate rules for shared use.

traffic laws are written for the convenience of motorists not for safety of cyclists. police need to know this and not apply traffic law where the safest maneuver is for us to ignore it.
