Austin's own Bicycle Sport Shop wins Platinum level Bicycle Friendly Business award at Interbike 2009
Leslie sent me word of this award on Monday, but I figured I'd let the story properly age before presenting it to y'all. Sounds like Bicycle Sport Shop just won one of the two Platinum Bicycle Friendly Business awards given out at Interbike this year:
The League of American Bicyclists Announces Bicycle Sport Shop as a Platinum Bicycle Friendly Business
"Nothing compares with the simple pleasure of a bike ride."
- President John F. KennedyAustin, TX – (September 17, 2009) Wednesday, September 16th the League of American Bicyclists announced Bicycle Sport Shop as a Platinum Level Bicycle Friendly Business. Bicycle Sport Shop received the Platinum designation because of their commitment towards a smaller carbon footprint and increased corporate social responsibility. In addition, the store, exceeds requirements for bike parking, showers and a percentage of employees who commute.
“Bicycling is at the heart of our business, “said Leslie Luciano, Advocacy Director for Bicycle Sport Shop. “Our goal is to not only promote cycling to our staff by proving them the resources and facilities to commute, but the to promote cycling to others through community education, support of local cycling clubs and organizations, corporate-based commuter incentive programs and our annual city Wide Austin Commuter Challenge”.
According to Walter Finch, the League’s Advocacy Director, when bicycling is infused in an office or company culture, great things happen, including reduced health care costs; more productive employees; improved worker and customer satisfaction; smaller carbon footprint; and increased corporate social responsibility.
“We’re delighted to highlight Bicycle Sport Shop and the ways in which they are getting more people on bikes,” stated League President Andy Clark. “In today’s challenging economic climate, businesses with healthy, happy and productive employees are going to be the most competitive and the most sustainable – the Bicycle Friendly Business program recognizes some of the best examples of this in practice.”
Applying as a Bicycle Friendly Business is easy and free. Applicants receive technical assistance from the League staff as well as tools to evaluate and assess their bicycle friendliness through the application process. The Bicycle Friendly Business application is available online at www.bicyclefriendlybusiness.org.
The Bicycle Friendly Community and Bicycle Friendly Business programs are generously supported by program partners Bikes Belong and Trek Bicycle’s One World, Two Wheels Campaign.

Congratulations BSS! Y'all have been big supporters of the Austin Bike community for the past couple decades, it's great to see you guys get some recognition for it.
Yeah! BSS is a cool and friendly but not only that, they are really helpful. One night riding home ( I stay Parmer - Anderson Mill Area) the pedal on my bike broke completle off with just a nut nub sticking out, I was at Burnet and Anderson Ln.. I was hopeing I could make it to Academy Surplus on 183 and Pavillion in time before closing. I made it to Braker and 183 and Lo and Behold, there was the Bicycle Sport Shop sign like a beacon in the night! They were closed, it was around 7:30, 8:00 pm. There was some guy inside working by himself. I knocked on the window and he came out, saw my predicament and sold me a pair of pedals and mounted them too. Some good ones at that. I was thankful and made it home and was able to ride to my appointments the next morning. Thanks Bicycle Sport Shop. And thanks to the guy that helped me out, I never got his name, and my bike is the only way I have to get around.
Very cool. They helped me out of a bind in a big way during an alleycat once. I'd shown up at the bridge with a busted chain, and even though the shop was closed that day (holiday) one of the employees told me where their recycled metal was, I limped my bike down, snagged a length of chain to replaced the busted links (fo' free!), fixed my shit, and went on to come in second place in the race! Thanks BSS!
