Social Cycling ATX presents: Thursday Night Social Ride - A ride to benefit an injured cyclist AND the Austin Food Bank!
Update: Now we've got a flyer, and more info from Keith:
Hey Everyone. It's almost that time of week again. Let me tell you about what is going down on this week's Thursday Night Social Ride. This week we are lending a hand.
This last year we have started a ride that has turned into a huge family. We have had a bunch of fun and met a ton of new people. I know I feel lucky and thankful to be involved with the ride and I am pretty sure most of you do too. This week we are going to help some people out that are not so fortunate and having a hard time and we are going to have a blast doing it!
Here are the details:
WHEN AND WHERE: Thursday Novemeber 19th, 7pm at the Scoot Inn (map: http://tinyurl.com/ydcoeok). We leave at 8pm sharp.
WHAT: We are having a canned food drive to help folks out who are having a hard time. Bring a couple of non-perishable food items. We leave the Scoot Inn at 8 and take a killer long cruise, stopping occasionally at stores for refreshments. Then we will end up at the Sustainable Waves compound for a benefit for local cyclist and Riverboat Gambler musician, Ian Mcdougall, who was hit by a car last month and is facing some massive medical bills. They are providing a few kegs of beer and have arranged for The Finest Kind, a local r&b dub band to provide us with entertainment.
HOW: Social Cycling ATX rides with traffic and not against it. We stay to the right in ONE LANE, we STOP AT RED LIGHTS and let cars pass. Listen to your ride leaders. They have your best interest in mind and are some really nice people.
BRING: A helmet is always a good idea, but I am leaving that up to you. You ride at your own risk on the Social Ride. Lights, Lock and an ID if you plan on getting into the bars are necessities.
I will be collecting food items at the Scoot Inn and taking them to the Capital Area Food Bank on Friday. Bring what you can to help out our causes this week. It's a great way to appreciate how lucky we all are and to be thankful for what we have.
See everyone at the Scoot!

Old news below the cut...
A couple minutes ago the following press release regarding this Thursday's Social Ride showed up in my inbox. There's going to be a fund-raiser out at Sustainable Waves for a cyclist (and musician) that was recently injured in a collision, and we're going to head out there to show our support:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
AUSTIN BICYCLISTS AND MUSICIANS REACH OUT TO ONE OF THEIR OWN Who: Local R&B trip DUB organ trio The Finest Kind, ATX Social Cycling, and Sustainable Waves ban together to help Ian McDougall and the Capital Area Food Bank.
TFK is a groove oriented Hammond organ trio featuring Rolf Ordahl, Ross Alexander, and JJ Johnson. The trio recently supported local songstress Erin Ivey at the Long Center for her Kaleidoscope Project.
Sustainable Waves is a turnkey production house that fabricates solar powered stages. Past local events include Zombie Ball, FEAST, and the SXSW Red Bull Party.
What: ATX Social Cycling takes to the streets to raise awareness about cycling safety and bike awareness. The ride, expected to have 300+ cyclists, will conclude at Sustainable Waves for a benefit concert by Austin’s own The Finest Kind.
The social ride will leave from The Scoot Inn (East 4th & Navasota) at 8p.m. Riders are encouraged to bring a can of food to support the Capital Area Food bank.
On Saturday October 17th, while riding his bike home, a car hit Ian Mcdougall, guitarist for Riverboat Gamblers. Donations are requested and proceeds will go to a fund to help cover expenses associated with his accident.
Where: Sustainable Waves
4704B Caesar Chavez Suite 120
Austin, TX 78702When: Thursday, November 19 2009 10:00pm
8:00pm ATX Social Cycling departs from Scoot Inn
10:00pm Cyclist Arrive at Sustainable Waves
10:30pm Live Music Performance from the Finest Kind
Now THAT'S a great idea, and a killer way to harness the Social Ride to actually do some good. Make sure to bring a few cans of food with you and hook the Capital Area Food Bank up. Also remember a few bucks for beer and to donate to Ian's cause. Medical bills are a bitch, so any way we can help will be appreciated, I'm sure.
JJ Johnson is absolutely an incredible drummer...def. my favorite drummer in our fair city and one of the most talented drummers in the WORLD! These guys will be good, you should def. stick around to check them out.
