LOLZ on the intarwebz, and calls for censorship...
Update x2: Thankfully facebook has resisted pressure from the censormongers on their site, releasing the following statement with regards to the original anti-cyclist fan page on the San Fran Streetsblog page:
We take our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities very seriously and react quickly to remove reported content that violates our policies. Specifically, we're sensitive to content that includes hate speech and/or actionable threats of violence. The goal of these policies is to strike a very delicate balance between giving Facebook users the freedom to express their opinions and beliefs, even controversial ones, and maintaining a safe and trusted environment.
We've reviewed this group and determined that it doesn't violate our policies. We encourage users to report anything they feel does violate these policies using the report links located throughout the site. Thanks.
COMMON SENSE PREVAILS! Thank God someone out there is capable of keeping their head about them over what seems to be a rather emotional issue.
Update: As of 2 days ago there's now a Facebook Group of cyclists calling for the censoring of the aforementioned fan club, and they've got over 11k members. Though I'm not entirely surprised, my first comments posted to their wall were censored and deleted almost immediately. Douchebags. Similarly, an article was posted to Bicycle.Net which also supports these guys, and my comments there were deleted as well. Censor-mongering cyclists sicken me. Grow some thicker skin and realize words are words already.
This awesomely trollish fan club is making the rounds on the facebooks these days, typically being posted by bikers along with either the requisite rage against their ignorance or a more Orwellian call for censorship. For everyone calling for censorship, YOU SUCK! The rest of you, I feel you though you have to remember this is a TROLL! An internet-only version of this, if you will.
In a way I think the fan club is doing us a service by highlighting these people so that we can avoid them, school them, pour sugar in their gas tank, whatever. There's a handy little button that allows us to see all the fans, and people in your friends list automatically filter to the top. I'm happy to say that 0% of my internet friends are fans of "There's a perfectly good path right next to the road you stupid cyclist!", but you can easily do the check yourself if you're curious about the circles you travel in.
So all y'all calling to censor this site: a) fuck you you're what's wrong with this world, and b) you're doing us a disservice by masking these ignorant douchebags from us, so fuck off about it already and let it stand. They've got 32,341 fans at this moment (for comparison ATXBS.com only has 434 and Social Cycling ATX has 2,238) so they're actually becoming a rather good resource for asshole-spotting. Safe your bile for drunk drivers and people who actually hit-and-run cyclists as opposed to internet tough guys and trolls.
Sorry if I come across as harsh. I love you all, even the censormongers amongst you.
Yeah I'm with you on that...I was censored by the forum for this view today on the couple injured on parmer...
To: forum@BicycleAustin.info If one turns his/her back on traffic in the street he will be a victim to any who can turn a key regardless if one is using a helmet.
The bicycle saftey classes in this town and the whole idea of the safety observed by 'cyclists' in this town is suicidal to say the least not to mention the whole 'be a part don't be apart' Idiot 'commie-ideal'.
One must ride with the 'ENEMY' in sight at all times to edge ones chances for survival.
I may start classes for Bicycle Suvival skills to teach our children not to be suckers.
I hope those 2 do heal well and ride again but lets not praise the helmet when we should condem the style of riding. WILLIAM MOTHER FUCKIN'KERN
Wow Jason. You just upgraded my social status from obscure cycling enthusiast to "fuck you you're what's wrong with this world." Never knew.
Well then, vive le hate groups.
Anyway, perhaps it's true. Though it seems to me there's a difference between government censorship (bad) and me requesting pressure on facebook to take down a page promoting violence towards cyclists (you decide). So while I appreciate your elevation of my status, I'm not sure I'm so deserving.
Love returned,
Clif
I know, I know. I don't really mean it Clif, you're a great guy I just CANNOT STAND censorship in any form whatsoever. That shit raises my blood pressure. I guess that the whole unjust warfare, unnecessary starvation, oppressive totalitarian governments and corporations raping the earth's resources for short-term profit rank up there above censorship, but it's still one of my buttons and one we can effect a little easier than the Military Industrial Congressional complex itself. I guess I should revise my statement to read "fuck CENSORSHIP, IT'S what's wrong..." and make it a little less personal, but then I'd be censoring myself. OH THE IRONY!
... you can't comment on things unless you're listed as a fan, and if you un-fan it I believe it removes the comments you've made.
So some (many? most?) of the fans likely aren't fans at all -- they're just got that hook in their mouth ...
But yeah, everywhere I go I see people calling for people to report the group (and get it removed.) And there's other similar groups -- "I WANT TO RUN OVER CYCLISTS" and "run the Cyclists off the road", for example.
Ultimately, it's better to just leave it be. Besides, when these people interview for jobs and search the interweb for their name, they'll find their facebook, then they'll find these pages and groups, and their posts ... karma's a bitch, eh?
