help me pick a helmet

So, I want a helmet. I don't want to talk about people's personal opinions on to wear or not to wear one - I've already made up my mind. Now that we're past that, maybe someone can help with a couple questions / concerns.

  • I've got a big head. I like the Bell Citi, but the one-size-fits-all sizing apparently doesn't include me.
  • I want something that doesn't make me look like a neon colored astronaut. Yes, I want something marginally hip.
  • Skate style helmets (like the Bell Faction) look cool and seem to offer some additional side protection, but can anyone tell me how well those work out for you in the summer months? Those things look like they get really hot.

Whatcha think?

I haven't purchased a helmet in over ten years, but this probably still holds true. Like motorcycle helmets, different brands favor different head shapes. Ten years ago, Bell helmets were for round heads and Giro was for oval heads. So many brands now, I've not a clue.

Go to a decent bike shop (with more than one brand of helmet) and try some on. Maybe you'll get lucky and find a salesperson who knows their shit and can steer you to a proper fit.

Pricier helmets tend to have more friendly fit adjustments and more vents than cheaper models, but that doesn't mean you need to blow the bank account.

I like the Bell rotating dial adjustment for fit. Allows fast setup for cold weather liner. The added weight of a skate helmet might be tolerable for upright riding position or short rides.
