Cyclist struck pedestrian; pedestrian in critical condition
This doesn't sound good:

Yesterday evening a pedestrian was hit by a cyclist and is in critical condition at Brackenridge. The police didn't release either party's names, or too many details, but it looks like the pedestrian stepped into the path of the cyclist. For all the bitching I do about cars needing to watch out, the same goes doubly for us. Especially if you split lanes and blow lights. Stay on point, bikers! Pedestrians are even softer and more vulnerable than you are. We don't want to be hurting them.
I am so sorry to hear about this.
I am seeking details to help prevent this sort of incident from occurring. Despite precautions, the collision occurred, and I would like to assess that for the sake of others.
I have a set of standardized questions as well as several of my own that I would like to ask. I am not so interested in attaching people's names to the incident, so anonymity is fine by me. If the answers need to be kept under wraps for a few months, I can do that.
Please e-mail me and I will send the questions, or I can post them here.
Thank you,
Tom Wald

damn this was a crazy wreck. sounds like the pedestrian took a very brutal slam. the police said they had never seen some one so messed up from such a collision.
luckily for the rider he was wearing a helmet because if not he probably would have died. his bike did die! 4 day old surly long haul trucker and the frame is twisted like a pretzel. the head tube is moved about a foot from its original location, NUTS!!
fixed gears are like butt holes, every one has one.
the cyclist is a friend of mine and he called me right after it happened. His bike is totaled as is his helmet. He also sustained a very serious injury to his shoulder and arm.
the guy literally stepped out of nowhere while my friend was obeying all traffic laws.
i dont know anyone who hasn't jaywalked, and i would never ever ever suggest the guy "deserved this". it's a terrible accident and i hope the guy pulls through.
