Easy Street Recumbents, Austin's hidden jewel of a recumbent shop is going to be hosting their annual "'Bent Event" THIS Sunday at their HQ right behind the big Half Price Books on North Lamar. They're running a ride beforehand and will have all sorts of recumbent-based bicycles, tricycles, and human powered vehicles to test out:

2010 'Bent Event

I hope you can make it to this year's 'Bent Event, along with your
steed. The Event will be Sunday, April 18th, 12PM-5PM. A 'bent ride
will go out at 12PM, right at the start, so come a little before 12 if
you want to ride along. As before, this will be a pretty casual ride
with someone riding "sweep" to make sure that no one gets left behind
in the wilds of Shoal Creek. The ride should take about 45 minutes,
covering 8 miles or so.

As usual, I bring in a bunch of oddball stuff that I don't normally
keep around. This year we'll have lots of pint-sized trikes from
Catrike, KMX, and Funcycle, so be sure to bring kids or grandkids.
They'll have something to do.

Two sad omissions this year will be the Snake Bike from The Austin
Bike Zoo, which has a previous engagement that day, and Velomobile USA
who is (happily for them) on a deadline filling several orders for
their fancy new Quest velomobiles. The Austin Bike Zoo will try to
send some creature or another over to visit.

I swung by this 2 years ago to see what the recumbent craze is all about and was amazed at the variety and breadth of their offerings. Everything from a beach-cruiser style basic 7-speed up to your fast and light three-speed low-profile recumbent racing trike. Several local builders were also out showing off their home-made recumbent creations, all in all it was pretty badass. If you have even an inkling of interest in these laid-back machines, you should swing by Sunday and see what's up.
