BIKE THIEVES DOWNTOWN/UT CAMPUS - WATCH OUT!
Don't know how many of you lock up in the UT/downtown area, but there's been an upswing in the rate of stolen bikes recently, including lots of cable locks being clipped. I'm reposting this from Craigslist as it gives a pretty decent description of the perpetrator, but bike theft has been on the rise in the ATX lately, so watch out:
-----
beware everyone, bike thievery is becoming far to rampant in what used to be our humble village of Austin TX. I saw somebody holding an allen wrench and what appeared to be a 15mm socket wrench eyeing bikes parked outside of the FAC at UT earlier today. I just watched until he went up to MY bike. Then, i approached him and asked how he was doing. He abruptly ran off. I secretly followed him for a while since his route was conveniently on my way to work. At around 3rd and Lavaca, he tried stealing handlebars off of a bike parked near the downtown Which Wich. I rode up to him and told him to get away or i would call the cops and he fled once more.
He was riding a white peugeot fixed gear conversion and had a dark color of grip tape. No brake, toeclips. The guy himself was a tall white guy. He was wearing a gray hoodie and had a blue messenger bag. I know i probably described every hipster in Austin with that description, so don't attack anyone unless you're sure...but if you're sure, by all means, attack away. If you manage to stab him through the head with the pointed end of your U-Lock, i'll gladly buy you a new lock.
-----
I want to repeat: white brakeless w/ clips peugeot conversion, dark bartape, BLUE messenger bag. Hipster bikers MAY occasionally change their girl jeans and hoodies but how often do they change their bags? From the smell I say never. If you see him fucking with a bike please kill him with your U-Lock, for the greater good. I'll be sure to do the same. And if for some reason YOU read this note, watch your ass. We don't call the cops on bike thieves in Austin. We deal with them.
Please repost this and get the word out in the ATX. Hopefully someone'll break this fuckers hands before anyone else gets ripped off.
Finally if you don't have one already GET A U-LOCK. Cables are no good except for as a secondary lock and you'll feel real shitty when your $500 bike gets stolen because you used a $20 cable to "lock" it up. 4 out of 5 urban cyclists recommend the Bulldog or Kryptonite Mini for smashing thieves faces in.

I need your help. My Tomac mountain bike was stolen tonight (1-24-08) on UT campus. It is a very unusual bike - I have not seen another one like it.
If you buy/sell used bikes, would you watch for an 98 special comp model orange and white Tomac because it is mine. my best chance of finding it is in 24 hrs so I am getting the word out.
Can you give me any advise on how to find my bike? I loved this thing and cant imagine life without it.
cheers
