Austin on Two Wheels presents: Taste of Downtown Tour - now priced within our budgets!
Check this out y'all! I know I've been totally blowing off the Austin on Two Wheels Discover the City on Two Wheels rides due to the price, but as a special for all the Social Cycling ATX participants Elliott and Keith have dropped the price for this Wednesday's special Taste of Downtown II ride to only 10 bones! No shit! Here are the details from their site:
Taste of Downtown II Tour
A variation on our most popular ride from our spring social ride series, we'll take in more of the best locally made food our town has to offer. Stops will include great burgers samplers at Your Mom's Burgers, Latin American cuisine at El Sol y La Luna, and dessert at Tart Frozen Yogurt. Vegetarian options will be available. All food and drink, bike valet, and our professional ride guides as well as our series partner businesses coupon book are included in your registration. We'll be drawing to giveaway an Electra Amsterdam Royal 8 bike at the end of the series. Total ride distance will be approximately 6 miles.

RIDE PACE: These are social rides so we will be riding at a pleasant social pace and no one will be dropped. Our ride guides will be wearing identifiable shirts and will keep the group together and make sure no one is left behind. This ride is about the simple pleasure of riding with friends, not competition or workouts. If you want to race or get in a workout, we'd suggest you do that before the ride.
OTHER INFO: Please bring a bike in working order. Our ride guides will have spare tubes and basic repair equipment should you run into trouble. In addition to food and drink on the tour, bottled water will be available to participants. Please bring ID if you plan to sample alcoholic beverages at the stops. Staff will watch bikes at each stop so locking bikes will be optional. If you are in need of a tune-up, please check with a bike shop like Bicycle Sport Shop at least three days before the tour.
INFO SPECIFIC TO EVENING RIDES: This ride will end after sunset requiring everyone participating to bring a bike with the legal minimum of a working front light and rear reflector (rear light preferred.) If your bike does not have these minimums, you will not be allowed to ride with us. We will have a limited number of front and rear light sets for sale for $25 cash (tax included) at the beginning of the ride.

One quick note: I've gotten several reports from employees and former employees that the owners of Your Mom's Burger Bar have been TOTALLY screwing the folks that work for them out of all the credit card tips, and shorting the hours on their paychecks in a really fucked up way. If you do choose to frequent this establishment and pay with a credit card, PLEASE do all tipping in cash unless you just want to fuck the employees and send money directly to the owners' pockets. In that case, keep tipping on your card and watch the employees cry. Cash = happy, taken care of employees. Remember that.
Oh yeah, and FUCK ANYONE AND EVERYONE who rips off the people that work for them. What a pack of assholes. Reform your practices y'all, and maybe your business won't suck so bad.
SNAP!
Just a quick note on tipping. We run these tours a all inclusive trips which mean you only need to bring an ID. We do tip the staff at each stop, so you do not need to tip on our tours.
We are happy to offer this special pricing for Social Cycling Austin members, but keep in mind we do pay staff for these rides and at a living wage. In fact, all the money for these test rides have gone to Keith and his ride leaders. I have not seen a dime. I am committed to growing Austin's bike culture and getting more people on bikes. I'm also committed to paying folks in our community a decent wage. The original price of $35 is less than dinner and a movie for 2 people, and we think our rides are a hell of a lot more fun. I know everyone loves free, but free does not sustain our community and pay the bills for our staff.

Awesome, and I wasn't trying to be too much of a dick about y'alls pricing. I know it costs money to put events on (hell I spent over $80 to fix my stereo and buy body paint for last Saturday), it's just a loose rule I have on my site that I don't advertise rides over $10, or $15 if they're REALLY awesome and a good value. It's why you also don't see most of the big annual roadie rides, or the Urban Assault ride, or several other high-profile events that cost $30-50+. I'm really glad to read that y'all tip the employees in cash. I wouldn't have even brought up the Your Mom's issue if this complaint wasn't so pervasive amongst people associated with the business who didn't have ownership stake in it.
I wasn't aware of your guidelines but it makes sense. Thanks for the post.

Oh, and we do tip the staff at the stops in cash.

If Keith stopped using Social Cycling to send out Facebook message spam about his monetary endeavor, I'd maybe give a shit.
maybe you can figure out a way to employee members of the bike community. i think that would be awesome.
I second that.
