Fishy sub-24 hour ebay ads? Deal of a lifetime or stolen bikes?
Update 2: Firefox cache to the rescue! Though apparently I can't find ALL the ads I looked at, here's half a dozen of the bikes. Thankfully the seller posted their ads as images, so I was able to grab the following files. If you've had a REALLY NICE bike stolen recently, please check this out:
* Jamis Xenith time trial bike w/ Dura-ace
* Time road bike w/ Campy 11spd
* Specialized Transition w/ SRAM & Zipp wheels
* Ellsworth Evolve 29er full suspension w/ SRAM
* Look road bike w/ full Campy record
* Specialized Stumpjumper S-Works full suspension w/ SRAM XO/XX & Shimano XTR mishmash
* Specialized Stumpjumper S-works full suspension w/ full XTR
* Orbea time-trial bike w/ full SRAM Red
* Santa Cruz Tallboy w/ mishmash of parts
* Cannondale Scalpel w/ SRAM XX (siiiiiiick)
* Specialized S-Works road bike w/ SRAM
Very fishy looking to me. Do any of these bikes ring any bells with y'all? If so please let me know so we can deal with some shit. According to my source there were about 60 bikes listed earlier today and now ALL of them have been removed. If this is theft then this might even rival the antics of the bicycle supervillain himself...
Update: Damn, the ads JUST disappeared from eBay. This is starting to look VERY fishy. Another red flag was that even though this place sells "overstock", all the bikes were listed as USED, but in great condition. Hm.
A reader just alerted me to a couple rather fishy-looking ebay ads all originating from a seller in Cedar Park. It's a bunch of high-end bikes with no minimum bid, no sizing information, and buy-it-now prices of $800-1k each. From the look of the bikes most of the component groupsets are worth more than the buy-it-now price.
Who knows, maybe a high-end shop with a stupid owner that can't measure bikes went out of business and just wants to dump all their merchandise. OR maybe some nice bikes got stolen and are being fenced via ebay. All I know is that if you've lost a nice Ellsworth, Cannondale, Specialized, Time, Jamis, Bianchi, Santa Cruz or another high-end mountain, road or time-trial bike, you might want to poke around here sooner than later. In case the ads disappear, the sellers name is Swankytownbotique and according to their eBay page they sell overstock products, but still, something about all this doesn't seem to add up.
If you do happen to recognize a bike of yours, please let me know.
