2010 Texas Custom Bicycle Show coming to Austin mid-October!
The sun is shining, the temperature is in the 50s, and there are reports of a shooter on UT. Yep, it is now OFFICIALLY fall in Austin, TX. With the fall comes what's become one of my favorite events of the year: The (3rd) Annual Texas Custom Bicycle Show! Spanning two days (October 16th-17th) and coming up in just a few weeks, this year is going to be even bigger and better than the last with the first day's exhibition being housed in the Austin Music Hall, and the second happening in conjunction with a Cyclocross Race, so all y'all fine people can watch some muddy bike action on top of checking out all the beautiful clean ones. Badass! And just look at this list of exhibitors:
- Alchemy
- Bilenky Cycle Works
- Crumpton Cycles
- Daltex Handmade Bicycles
- Dominion Bicycle Company
- Edoz Bicycles
- Gallus Cycles
- Gjertsen Cycling Tools
- Kirklee Bicycles
- Kongko Design
- Maczuzak Composites
- Massengill Cycles
- Meech Custom Bicycles
- North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS)
- Samurai Cycleworks
- Southwest Frameworks
- Spokiz
- Trail LED Bicycle Lights
- True Fabrication
- Violet Crown Cycles
Quite a few of these folks are from Austin, but a good showing are from a bit outside of town, and there's even a handful of builders coming in from out of state! NICE! If you've never had a change to see a whole mess of artisan-built frames up close, you owe it to yourself as a bike geek to come to the show.
Now in its third year, the Texas Custom Bicycle Show brings the best of the best to our hometown thanks to the tireless (right?) work of Glenn Thompson, owner of Daltex Handmade Bicycles. Though he operates out of the Dallas area, he's chosen to host the show in Austin for a second year now in large part due to the incredible bicycle community we have here, aka. all of you folks! So don't disappoint, get your asses out there and show these builders some local love. They came this far to see you, the least you could do is ride downtown and see what they do.
For all the latest news on the show as well as exhibitor profiles and other interesting stuff about custom framebuilding, check out the show's blog.
I ride a custom Daltex road bike (though sadly without that parts build) that Glenn built up and displayed at the last show. It's pretty much the sickest thing on 2 wheels and I ride it freaking everywhere. My buddy Brian just got himself a swanky new Dominion touring bike that he's been taunting us all with, so beautiful custom frames have been on my mind lately. If you want to get to meet the folks that actually built them, you don't need a visa and a plane ticket to southeast Asia, you just need to visit the show.
