Frankenbike #37 - Austin Bike Zoo
I've been getting lots of people asking me what's up with FrankenBike, so here's what I know.
FrankenBike is currently transitioning between organizers. Up until this point it's been in the capable hands of Chris Gross, but he's decided to pass on the whip to the Brothers Larson so that he can focus on FUBAR, his bicycle newspaper. If you've met either of them you know they'll do a badass job. I'm sure some of y'all have noticed that FrankenBike.org has been taken over by some dastardly domain name resellers. Things are currently being migrated to FrankenBike.net, but in the meantime check out the OFFICIAL FrankenBike Myspace page for all the latest and greatest info on the wheres and whens. Like this for instance...
"FrankenBike # 37 noon-5pm 08/30/08 @ the Austin Bike Zoo @ 1706 E. 17th St 78702"
That's right, this months' FrankenBike is going to be at the Austin Bike Zoo. If y'all haven't ever heard of them or dropped by their compound, you really need to plan on attending this one. These guys are the people responsible for all the badass human-powered movers that were used for the Yellow-bike Shop Move last May. As their name implies they've also got a whole stable of animal-themed bicycle contraptions, including a scorpion, butterfly, praying mantis, and even an 80-foot long snake bike. It must be seen to be believed. And that's not even the big draw of this event!
No, the REAL reason to come is all the incredible deals you can find at this thing. I've picked up Sugino 75 cranks for a song, a Phil Wood bottom bracket for a dance, and I won't even tell you how cheap the two Selle Rolls saddles were; it'd probably make you cry like a little girl. Be there early and beat me to it! It's not like I NEED to be spending more money on my bikes...
