Meals on (Two) Wheels - Food Delivery by Bike!
I received the following from Nadia Barrera, one of the badass city employees who looks out for the Austin biking community:
I wanted to let you in on some exciting news! Meals on Wheels and More is embarking on a special project that will help improve the environment and let our volunteers get a workout while they deliver food to some of the most fragile members of our community—all in just one hour.
On September 15th, Meals on Wheels and More will launch the “Meals on Two Wheels” program, through which interested volunteers can elect to bike one of 12 preselected routes instead of driving, cutting down on gas costs, gas emissions, and improving their fitness. Through a grant from a company that wishes to remain anonymous, MOWAM will be able to keep a fleet of three specially-designed bicycles and cooler-holding carts at our headquarters for volunteers to use.
You are such a dedicated supporter of the homebound elderly and disabled in our community that I wanted to make sure you knew about this project before its release to the public. I’d also like to invite you to attend our kick-off event on Monday, September 15 at our Central Kitchen, 3227 East Fifth Street . A short presentation will begin at 10:30a and the bicycles will begin delivering meals at 11:00a. We expect this to be a popular story among the local media.
The Meals on Two Wheels program is an exciting venture for us. It’s a program that is truly unique to Austin and the Meals on Wheels community in so many ways. It’s a testament to this city’s passion for the environment and to our passion for serving both our clients and volunteers in a holistic way. We are committed to sustainability – of both the frail members in our community and the environment.
I hope you will join us.
Sincerely,
Dan PruettPresident & CEO
