Webmaster Ed just informed me of the following story:

http://news8austin.com/content/top_stories/default.asp?ArID=218510

...The Austin City Council Thursday approved looking into the possibility of creating a buffer zone at traffic signals.

The zone would allow two-wheel vehicles to essentially jump to the front of the line at a red light...

HELL YEAH!!! I've seen this implemented in other cities, specifically Portland, Oregon. My parents just moved up there and I've been envious ever since, maybe this'll help me deal with it a little bit better. Maybe.

I don't really understand these at all. For two reasons.

1) Why would motorized two wheeled vehicles be allowed in bike boxes. The can move just as well as cars. They're basically small cars....

2) Why would you want to be infront of cars at an intersection? It just means you're going to hold them up and piss them off. Is it really any safer? Is it just that other cars can see you?

Anyway traffic in Austin is already congested. We don't need to take up anymore room on the road with bike boxes. Just stay right and be cool.

...what the rule was. We were coming up to Red River and 9th and we threaded our way up to the front. Two bike cops were already there, so I asked them what they thought of doing that.

Their response was that it's NOT illegal and that if we were aware of and accepting of the risk involved, they didn't care.

The best substitute for good manners is fast reflexes.

Awe does this mean i can't trespass and cut the corners and drive the wrong way ON THE STREET...ANY direction on ANY sidewalk and what ever else I want to do! be careful what you wish for kiddo's...late!

Of course not! No cop no stop, threading, parking lots, all that shit's fair game. This just means you have legal precedent for cutting in line, and I'm all for that.

Wtf, why just scooters and motorcycles? It should be for US

that would be sick. i've been noticing a bunch of dotted lines bike-lanes width from the curb in various parts of downtown and around campus, etc... too. i guess it might be pretty damn cool around here some day soon
