Cyclist (possibly) killed on Parmer - Update: Cyclist injured but ok
Last Wednesday (on the Bicycleaustin forum) someone mentioned a very fatal-sounding accident that occurred on Parmer Road earlier that morning:

My daughter called me all worried because a cyclist was hit on Parmer (McNeil area) and his "skull cracked open". I did hear fire trucks on my ride in, but that's not uncommon. I work in that general area but I don't ride on Parmer in the mornings.Stay safe out there!
The follow-up comment confirms this:
My roommate got her hair cut at Fantastic Sam's McNeil/Parmer location tonight. Her hairstylist claimed that the bicycle crash was fatal.
:-(
I learned my lesson, never trust a hairdresser. Here's what happened straight from the horses' mouth:
Cyclist on Parmer
I know the fate of the cyclist on Parmer - it was me!Mild concussion, broken cheek bone, stitches in forehead and lip, and countless aches and pains - but I'll heal, the worst part is my bike is totaled
I was coming down the hill toward McNeil with traffic backed up to the top of the hill. Same as always I was picking up speed to ensure I made it through the light that I saw was about to go green. I specifically chose to be on the hoods instead of the drops because of the high traffic I wanted quick access to the brakes. From the angle I was coming at I didn't see that the southbound traffic was opening to let someone turn left from the northbound side onto Corpus Christi. The first I saw of him it was already too late, I was traveling at about 28mph and did a complete faceplant into the side of a jacked up pickup truck. When I came to the ambulance was already on the scene and they were placing me on a backboard.
The Lord was truly watching out for me. It should have been WAY worse. After cat scans and stitches I was actually home by 1:30 (accident was about 8:40).
The officer on the scene told my wife (she arrived right after I left and picked up the carbon tubes that used to be my bike) that it was clearly the motorists fault. In an effort to head off any insurance bullshit I'll be heading to an attorney tomorrow.
I've got pics from the ER and of the bike - not sure y'all want to see either.
Y'all be safe out there - you never know where they're gonna come from!
WHEW! I'm glad to read that.
I frequent a weekly group ride that goes out Parmer on Tuesdays - I'm sure it'll be the main topic of conversation. I'll let you know.
