If you've been injured and need to contact a lawyer, The Shefman Law Group is a local firm that specializes in working with injured cyclists. Check them out: http://www.shefmanlaw.net/. I know it goes without saying (I mean look at me!) but I'm not affiliated with these guys in any way. I've never even used them so I don't know if they suck or not (many lawyers do) but they seem to be the guys to go to for bike-related legal counsel.

Another avenue of recourse if you've been harassed by a police officer is to go to the Office of Police Monitor.

Office of Police Monitor
1520 Rutherford Ln.
Austin, TX 78723
Main number (512) 974-9090
Officer Misconduct Number (512) 974-5200

You can lodge a complaint against an officer over the phone or in person. All complaints are investigated.

James Clayton, (alleged) BIKE THIEF
(Booking photo c/o APD)

Was riding in New Braunfels earlier today, and was hit by a navy blue PT Cruiser, plates: 5XY (handicap) RD. I got off my bike, stood in front of the car and requested his insurance information two times, to which he replied "You were in my way, no." Mind you, there were two cyclist in the lane in a 10mph zone in the local park. As predicted, the police arrived and told me I am essentially out of luck and they wont help to reimburse any damage done. Thank you once again local PD.

No, the police won't help you get reimbursed. They don't do stuff like that. However you should tell the police that you want an accident report filed. You are entitled to a copy. You then use that information to contact the driver's insurance company.
Um, just how badly were you hurt or your bike damaged? If it's neglible then it may not be worth the effort.

(No, it wasn't me -- I just saw this on CL, thought it was worth mentioning here)

Last night (Friday about 9:30 p.m.) on Shoal Creek Blvd, just south of 2222, I was run off the road by a driver in a black Mitsubishi SUV. Luckily, I was able to jump up the curb and behind a light pole. Otherwise, I would have been run over.

The driver (male, white, 30s, tall) then got out of the car and started yelling furiously.

A neighbor in one of the nearby houses heard the incident and came out to their front porch and shouted to ask what was going on.

The driver then got back in his SUV and drove off.

If you encounter something similar, get the license plate and report it to the police.

Look out for a white, male, 30s, driving a black Mitsubishi SUV.

This guy is dangerous.

So I went for a ride yesterday on my new Cannondale six. I was riding a short stint down Cameron to turn on 51st and head out, but as the road narrowed to a left and right turn lane (narrow lanes at that), the bitch behind the wheel of capital metro bus 7449 decided to try to squeeze between me and the traffic in the left turn lane. She didn't fit and luckily only ended up hitting my elbow with one of the running lights on the side of the bus. No crash, no scratches on the bike. I caught her stopped at the light to turn south on I-35, whipped out my camera phone, took a picture of the bus number, and called Capital Metro to complain. I also used a few choice expletives to yell at the bus driver. I have to follow up on the incident to make sure she at least gets a good year of suspension from driving a public transportation vehicle, but thought I'd give a heads up, so watch out for those buses!

Thanks for the details of this accident.
In general I suggest that we avoid addressing the other driver with expletives...it makes them angry and raises our own blood pressure.
Use legal means to address the problem, which you are doing.

I was riding home from the gangsta mass after party a little after the keg was floated and was hit by a new black sedan who went before her green light. They hit me from the side and knocked me out on impact. My friend who saw it said they kind of dragged me on the side of the car for a few feet then I landed on my head and then they left.I was going downhill on Guadalupe and got hit at 5th around 11:00pm. Left me unconscious for 5 minutes. Woke up in the ambulance going to Brackenridge. I now know it was a 2004 gray Pontiac 4-Door Sedan.

They drove off eastward down 5th but got caught a few blocks away or something because my exact shoe print was left in their side mirror, and I think I cracked their windshield . Fractured my wrist, cuts and road rash, fuckin sore back, a welp on my forehead. Hit and run on a cyclist, that's a felony. I hate to say it but I hope that bitch spent at least a night in jail, I'm in mad pain and have to move in two days.

This is all I know right now 'cause it just happened last night and I'm kinda hopped up on meds. I'm just grateful for not being too banged up, hopefully I'll be good by next Critical Mass.

This one was forwarded to me via email:

I was on Congress, riding home from work, and a Cap Metro bus was stopped in the right lane in front of me, in the middle of the block, not an intersection. I pulled up behind the bus, thinking it would move soon, but it never did, so I decided to go around it. I turned and signaled to the next approaching motorist that I wanted to move over. They waved and nodded, then slowed almost to a stop, and I waved back. As I moved into the lane, I heard them accelerate quickly. I moved as close to the bus as I could, but they sped by, and buzzed me pretty badly. I got thrown into the side of the bus and almost fell under the moving vehicle. I kept my balance and moved back in front of the bus to catch the car at the next light. The woman driving flicked me off and wouldn't roll down her window, so I got her plate numbers. She was hauling ass as I was writing them down, but Im pretty sure I got em right. Enjoy:

Black Chevy Tahoe, not more than a year or two old
Woman driving was a little on the heavy side, light colored hair, late twenties to thirties
Handicapped tag hanging from the rearview mirror (she seemed able enough to put her foot on the goddamn gas pedal)
Plates: 344-XSY

Buzzing is bad enough, but purposely baiting and running down a cyclist? Bullshit.

His real name is probably James Hogue. He has a rather colorful past described in the New Yorker magazine (September 3, 2001). You can wiki James Hogue to get further information.

White Chevy Colorado w/ a topper and a black cargo rack on top tried to crowd past me as we pulled up to the light at 2222 heading northbound on Shoal Creek Blvd. this morning at about 8:10. I holler something mildly sarcastic-soundingly, like "Hello? Watch out for me, please. Thank you."

Dude puts the truck in park, gets out and begins to yell at me something to the effect of "you people need to learn how to ride on the road..." Unfortunately, I didn't observe better judgment by remaining calm, and instead tried to yell back, not obscenities and anger, but things like "please share the road," "you're going to hurt someone," "what you did was illegal," etc. Unfortunately, most of this was lost, as he was too busy yelling at top of his lungs. But, evidently he did hear the word "illegal," and this seems to have touched a nerve. He storms up to me very aggressively, maybe an inch or two from my face, and proceeds to yell something at me (at this point, I was too busy trying to anticipate any physical violence that he might hurl my way, and didn't hear a word of whatever he was trying to say).

Not a very pleasant gentleman. He seems to have some anger issues, and evidently harbors some irrational hatred toward cyclists. So, watch out for him.

His license plate is TX 78T FJ4.

On the most-recent Halloween Critical Mass (Friday, October 31st, 2008) an officer drove his car into the crowd of Critical Mass cyclists in a very unsafe and aggressive manner, forcing cyclist traffic into parked cars and a curb. In this act he recklessly endangered their well-being and showed little regard for human life. The result of his actions was the apprehension of a single under-aged minor cyclist (out of a crowd of over 400), who as of now has spent almost 60 hours in police custody.

Here's the officer's information:

Officer Nametag: Spc. A Goodwin
Badge Number: 3940

His squad car carried the following identifying marks:

Car number: 8547
License Plate: 102-6336

Keep an eye out y'all, this guy is reckless and obviously a danger to cyclists! He's proven himself in the past to be willing to beat a suspect to death with a flashlight, so be very careful in your dealings with this officer of the law.

How'd you manage to find out where he lived?

Probably http://www.publicdata.com/ or something similar.

TXDL information is available for a fee. For something like a few thousand dollars you can get tapes of the entire database, and then for some more money they'll send you updates.

So then publicdata.com put this data up on the Interweb. And people screamed `privacy!' ... so they made it illegal. Which didn't really stop publicdata -- they just moved offshore.

Looks like the law changed again, and now they're back here.

In any event, if the government has your data, they're probably selling that data to somebody else.
