The Blotter reports: Man who struck cyclist has been charged with assault, accordin to arrest affadavit.
The Statesman's Blotter is reporting that a man who stuck a cyclist and fled the scene last Friday has been identified and apprehended due in part to his false testifying regarding the occasion:

An Austin man who police say hit a bicyclist with his truck and then posed as a witness has been arrested and charged with intoxication assault, according to an arrest affidavit.
Austin police were called to a crash involving a bicyclist and a motor vehicle on South First Street near Ben White Boulevard about 2:15 a.m. Friday, the affidavit said. Officers arrived to find a bicyclist face down in the roadway with multiple injuries. He was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with a traumatic brain injury, collapsed right lung and several fractures, the affidavit said.
Officers at the scene spoke to Francisco Estaeban Casarez, 25, who claimed he had not seen who had hit the cyclist. When Casarez spoke to police, he had a “moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage,” the affidavit said. A short time later, Casarez told officers that a blue sport-utility vehicle had hit the bicyclist, the affidavit said.
The document said that he had been at the OK Corral night club at South First and Ben White Boulevard that night.
Nearby, a police officer noticed Casarez’s 2006 black Ford F150 had suffered damage, the affidavit said.
“I observed the outline of a human torso on the hood of Casarez’s truck,” the officer recalled in the affidavit. “I also observed that the front grill of Casarez’s truck was damaged at the same point directly below the human torso outline on the hood. The front grill was pushed in. It was obvious the damage was fresh.”
Police then tried to arrest Casarez, who resisted, but who was eventually placed in custody by three officers, the affidavit said. While handcuffed, Casarez said “the victim was jaywalking and should not have been on the street,” the affidavit said.
Casarez was booked into jail that day and has since been released on bail, the affidavit said.
Good work APD. Does anyone know who the cyclist is, and if they're still in the hospital?
I actually helped Vince get his new bike just a couple of days before this. He was super excited about it and it was his only transportation aside from the bus and friends. He's a fantastic guy and always a joy to have at the Pour House bartending.
Get better soon Vince.

As a cyclist who sometimes discredits or fears the police; I'd like to say that this is encouraging. Thanks Apd for not buying the blue suv story and actually noticing the incriminating torso print left on the car. Take a cue for other instances. Drivers lie about cyclists to save their ass and their license. We don't need a license, and we don't feel the urge to lie to save our ass, because we are more often than not, just trying to ride home safe. P.s. this kind of thing should certainly encourage helmets and bright ass lights. Be seen and be safe y'all.
> We don't need a license, and we don't feel the urge to lie to save our ass
Oh whatever. Cyclists lie for the same reasons motorists do -- mostly in an attempt to avoid consequences for their actions. It's a human trait.
Losing one's license is only one of many possible consequences -- and really, in this case, it's one of the lesser ones. With some luck, the guy will get some jail time.
Though to be fair, the guy did do one thing right -- he stopped and rendered aid. He could have just taken off -- and he probably considered it, but realized it was wrong, and instead came up with his "oh, we just saw it" story. Which isn't a very good story, but he gets props for at least stopping.
including how the driver's shitbird family tried to lie for him at the scene.
