Social Cycling ATX and Jesus present: Spiritual Spokes - a ride, with, for, against, or whatever Jesus.
Update 2: I guess the dropping of comments is all facebook's fault and not due to Jesus or his peeps. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!
Update: So apparently a bit of open dialogue on the event's facebook page was too much to ask. Whomever runs the event deleted a whole shitton of constructive and pretty fucking civil conversation, for what reason I don't know aside from a feeble attempt to whitewash the event and make sure all the comments tow the party line. Whatever the case is, this behavior early on in this ride's inception pretty much charts their future course in my mind. Way to fucking go guys. This kinda bullshit is why I don't go to church, or on this ride. Hope everyone who has the exact same opinion has a blast hanging out together and discussing how much ya'll have in common and how great it's gonna be to live in a magical cloud kingdom where you don't HAVE to censor anybody elses opinions, because your sky wizard's already weeded them out for you. Please don't censor what I write, it sickens me.
So there's this little event coming up in less than a week that's generating a whole lot of controversy amongst local riders. No, it's not advocating getting hammered and then riding home from a bar at 2:30am in the morning, nor is it a political ride. It's a little something something about Jesus, and if you read the comments section or the shit other SCA (*snicker at acronym*) folks are posting on their respective facespots, you'd think folks were riding for a far more sinister purpose. Well here's the beef, judge it for yourselves. And if you're like a lot of the people who've chimed in already, there'll be plenty of judging to be done...
OH NO YOU DIDN’T!!!! OH YES WE DID!!!
Social Cycling is starting its own religion (well, sort of). As we roll through every part of the city on practically every other day; we figured why not roll with God on Sunday afternoon? What better place is there to feel God’s presence than on the seat of a bike, wind blowing past your face, and freedom pumping in your legs?Mike Kaylani and Rebecca Greenlee (two non-traditional lovers of God) will be leading you on a ride that doubles as a worship experience. Church will be in service from the moment our wheels go down to the moment we pick our butts off some chairs after a few cold ones. Typical format will be to ride, hang at a destination and talk about faith, ride some more, and wrap up by hanging at a place where we can chill together while drinking cheap beer. Location, route, and themes will change from week to week…so stay tuned in.
If the whole concept freaks you out a little bit, then you’re in good company. But the point is that God doesn’t give a crap about how you connect with Him as long as you do. Whether you feel in tune with God, are curious about the idea of God, have never been to church, can fog a mirror, or are just wondering who these freakos are...we would love to have you. In all seriousness, if you want to ride with some of the most God-loving, people-loving folks around, this ride is for you.
ROUTE: Coming Soon
WHERE AND WHEN: On the top of Doug Sahm Hill next to Palmer auditorium on Sunday, March 13 at 5:30 PM.
HOW: Social Cycling Austin rides AS traffic and NOT AGAINST it. We stop at red lights, yield the right of way and let cars pass as best we can. We are cool to both our fellow riders and the other traffic on the road. Listen up to those volunteers who are helping to lead the ride. They are some nice folks and have you best interests in mind.
WHAT YOU NEED: Lights, Lights, Lights, Inspiration, and an Open Mind
-Mike and Rebecca
Oh and that mention of the open mind does not preclude you wearing your helmets. 4:30pm on Doug Sahm Hill/Spliff Mountain/Circle Spot/Candy Mountain this Sunday. ALL are welcome. This should be interesting...
did anyone else notice that this ride is now canceled? if you try to go to its page on fcbk it's been removed completely. i am glad it was canceled, but how about a little explanation, social cycling. what a weird, anticlimactic ending.
Ride is still going; it's just not posted. The ride never intended to be controversial or offensive nor wants that as its reputation.
I think open dialogue is a good thing and nobody seemed to be taking cheap shots or being overly hostile. I'm pretty sure that the problem people have ISN'T that it's a religious ride, but that it's a religious hosted by social cycling and sent out to ALL members. It just seems wrong to have a group you joined for one reason co-opted like that. But it doesn't matter anyway because all differing opinions have been removed from facebook. There is to be no questioning the social cycling regime. Lesson learned.
Seriously, though, I think it's in the best practices of Christ (though his followers more often than not miss the boat) to serve those the majority culture looks down upon. So cyclists ought to fit right in.

Pot stirring is fun! Sometimes you have to look at things from both sides, and I enjoy playing devil's advocate and sticking up for people and opinions no one else will. People can have whatever kind of bike ride they want. It's the fact that SCA (lulz) is hosting it that is frickin odd. But who cares what I think? No one!
