SCA does some good: Lend Your Legs - Social Cycling Austin + Texas School for the Blind TANDEM RIDE!
So maybe I've been ragging on some of the Social Cycling ATX events lately, but here's one coming up in a couple weeks that actually sounds dope, and not because of a costume theme or the promise of free beer. No, this one rules because they're actually doing something GOOD for other folks! Read on for the radness:
New ride, new night, doing good, good times, free bike stuff and TNSR style post-ride hospitality.
Starting the evening of April 18nth (Monday) and for the next nine Mondays after that, we are riding and taking some kids from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired along with us on tandem bikes owned by the school.
What!?
The Texas School for the Blind has 10 tandem bikes (bikes for two people) and some great kids that would love a bike ride once a week. That's where we come in. We're going to meet up for ten straight Mondays, head over to the school, get these kids on the back of the tandems and take them for a bike ride. You will literally make their week by doing what you fools do every day anyway. There isn't an easier way for you to make a kid very very happy.
There are just 10 tandems, but the more people the merrier. It's a social ride. We can switch off giving rides and just riding along. I'd like to see a large number of y'all riding with us. Come to Shipe Park (map below) on Mondays by 6:30pm. The ride starts from the school (map below) at 7pm (SHARP! these kids are on a schedule) and goes until 8pm.
After the kids are safely back at the school, we'll head over to a local refreshment establishment for a little Thursday Style Socializing (read: free beer).
But wait, there is more FREE STUFF. Sun and Ski Sports likes this idea so much they want to help out. They'll be giving out some nice bike goods to those who ride. Also, each rider participating in five of the rides will be getting a nice gift certificate as Sun and Ski's way of saying "good job". Five rides also gets you entered in a raffle for a $50 gift certificate AND a bike tune up at their shop. Big thanks to Sun and Ski Sports!
WHERE AND WHEN: We meet at Shipe Park in the Hyde Park neighborhood. (map: http://tinyurl.com/3om4fr3) We will meet up at 6 and leave for the school at 6:30 SHARP! If you miss us at the park, catch us at the school no later than 7. (map: http://tinyurl.com/3sbxmhh). The ride from the school starts at 7pm sharp and ends at 8pm.
WHAT YOU NEED: LIGHTS, LIGHTS, LIGHTS, a lock (especially if you are riding a tandem and need to leave your bike at the school) , a valid ID for the after party.
I'd like to specially thank Mike Kaylani for doing the legwork to help set this up as well as the staff at the school for giving us the opportunity to work with their kids.
This is going to be really fun for everyone. I hope to a bunch of you out on Mondays soon.

This business starts a week from Monday, on the 19th of April at 6pm. Cruise over to Shipe park if you want to be a tandem captain or just ride along with the crew. Too cool, Keith.
