I JUST saw this new page on the APD website entitled the "Austin Community Bike Page", which has handy pointers and a FAQ on bike laws. One thing they address is fixed gear bikes, or "fixies" as they've so hip-ly stated. Here's the specific passage:

Safety Equipment
A person may not operate a bicycle unless the bicycle is equipped with a brake. Many bicycles Downtown are "fixies" meaning if the rear wheel is turning, so are the pedals. Most do not have brakes, except some will have a front brake. At night, cyclists must have a white lamp on the front and a red lamp OR red reflector on the back. Keep in mind that the Transportation Code 545.107 states "an operator SHALL give hand and arm signals."

Consider this warning, as the fine people of Fast Folks Cyclery just mentioned on facebook that the cops are already ticketing for no brakes. Thanks for the warning Natalie! Keep your eyes peeled for the 5-0 and don't let 'em scope your bike too hard. ;)

Oh yeah, and here's another fun bit:

State Laws Pertaining To Bicycles
Bicycles are allowed to ride on any street in the City of Austin. This includes Interstate 35, Mopac (Loop 1), US Highway 183, and the Toll Way, (except 183A). There are signs prohibiting bicycles on Mopac, but they are not enforceable because the city ordinance has been lifted

Who wants to take a ride to Mopac? 183 upper deck? Good times. And for all you fine folks who for years have given me shit about riding the upper deck, SUCK IT!

Thanks for sharing this information. I really like your way of expressing the opinions and sharing the information. It is good to move as chance bring new things in life, paves the way for advancement, etc. But it is well known to everyone that moving to new location with bulk of goods is not an easy task to move or shift from one place to other place because I have experienced about that and I face the problem like that. There I go to village near to my city faced that problem there.

That's a great work. This will help a lot of administrators to protect their website by removing such links. Thanks for this interesting post.70-649 vce //70-643 vce //exam 70-685 //exam 70-450 //exam 70-686 //70-663 vce //70-659 vce //70-648 vce //

The kids get so much out of this. I am glad to see things like this for the kids. You will not be disappointed at all with it. florida spinal cord injury

There is more than one type of penile implant and there is more than one way to remove genital warts. Doctors tend to specialize in one method over the other, so make sure your doctor lays out all the options and refers you to another doctor who can perform the procedure the way you prefer.

I've often imagined what it would be like to ride part of MoPac when it most resembles a full parking lot. It would be so sweet to pedal past the idling motors. Now that I know I might get away with it...

No brakes, no helmet, riding on the upper deck... legal, illegal, you guys just do it for the lulz, I understand. Be safe :)

APD has been increasing their ticketing for no lights as well. Considering that people get killed on South Lamar, riding on Mopac seems pretty fucking stupid.

... especially where the signs are. No shoulders, high speed traffic, etc. And perhaps most importantly, good alternative routes for bicycles that aren't far out of the way.

People *do* ride on Mopac south of 360. Between 360 and 290 is especially sketchy, but people ride it because any alternatives are many miles out of our way. (This is why we want a pedestrian bridge over the greenbelt next to Mopac.) This is my route to work, for example -- it's six miles if I take Mopac, or about thirteen miles if I avoid it and the stretch of 360 between Mopac and Lamar.

But there are no signs prohibiting bicycles south of 360.

South of Wm Cannon, Mopac is pretty nice. The shoulders are wide, and there's not quite so much traffic.

In any event, there's no new need to remove these signs. They've been superfluous for quite a few years now -- the only thing that's changed now is that somebody at the City of Austin has posted something on a web page that many of us already knew.

I'd suggest we just leave the signs alone. Nobody is likely to want to ride there anyways, and there might be some repercussions if somebody did remove the signs.

it is saturday. it is early. i don't see why this couldn't be done swiftly. anybody with a fancy camera want to document the descending of the sign? the ride that follows?

Perhaps a call to 311, saying that there are illegal signs on Mopac, will do.

... obviously they don't care. They've been up for many years, and yet haven't been the law for many years ...

This isn't a new development. The only new thing is that the city actually specifically said it.

More importantly who is ready to take down the NO BICYCLE signs on the MoPac entrance ramps?

well, this is really a nice post.I really like the way you start and conclude your thoughts.
