It's August and the moon is BIG: The Hot Sturgeon Full Moon Bike Ride

If you've been watching the sky these past few days you'll know that the full moon is officially NIGH! Word on this ride got out about a week ago, but true to form I've slacked till the last minute on posting it. DougMC has performed his calculations and figures the proper time in which to best appease the great night sky orb will be TOMORROW NIGHT (Friday) at 11:59pm. Here's what he's got to say about it:

The moon is about half full and waxing ... you know what that means! Yup, the Full Moon Ride is about a week away! T fheull moon actually happens at Saturday August 13, 1:57 PM CDT -- which puts it pretty much smack dab in the middle of when we'd ride if we rode Friday or Saturday night, but it's a tad closer to Friday's ride ... so that means we ride Friday Night! Assemble on Friday August 12 at the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge at about 11:59pm, and we leave at about 12:30am.

It's been pretty hot lately, but the temperature becomes bearable by midnight or so, so what could be nicer than a nice bike ride with a few hundred friends? It's a weekend, so those of us with 9-5s have no excuse!

Why the Sturgeon Moon? Well, the Farmer's Almanac tells us that the fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the Moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

As always, ride at your own risk, having lights on your bike is a good idea, it's a good idea to have at least enough tools to change a flat, bring a beverage to drink (it may be after midnight, but it's still hot!), etc.

(And if you see any poison ivy, warn people!)
