Laptop stolen from yellow bike project - Help!
Simon just sent me this bit of sad news...
TREASURE CITY SHOP NEWS - So they hit us again. One of our volunteers arrived at the shop on September 15th and found the top left portion of the facade behind the tree was ripped open, the cash box was busted open and empty, and again, the laptop is gone. We're putting out one last call to the community for an old laptop - nothing fancy, just needs to have a wireless card. We don't have room in our small shop for a full-sized computer, so we're looking for laptops only, please. We've beefed up security at the shop, and will be storing our valuables in a very secure shipping container from now on, so this should be the last time we lose our computer. Anyone able to donate their old laptop, please email us at austinyellowbike@gmail.com
If you can help, let 'em know. Major good bike karma in it for you.
Probably more like the third or fourth in the last year or two. And the last time I was there, it was a pretty nice Mac laptop.
I know they say they don't have space, but at this point I'd suggest they make space. All the computer does is run a web browser, so even a 486 would be adequate, and small Dell pentium boxes are found at garage sales for $5 all the time. (Goodwill might want $10 or $20, however ...)
Laptops, even old ones, are just too easy to steal ...
(Assuming that they're talking about the laptop you sign in with, of course ...)
Yes, they've had several laptops stolen now. I donated the last one and included a kensington cable lock to help deter theft, but there are half a dozen tools in a bike shop that'll defeat a kensington lock in seconds. Even if it was locked that doesn't mean much.
Maybe I should dig up one of my i-Openers and install a minimal Linux system on it and donate that. Though a 640x480 screen might be too limiting. That, and I'd need a supported 10baseT USB adapter ...
At least then, when (not if, when, secure storage box or not) it got stolen, the thief would be like `wtf is this?' and toss it out when he went through his haul ...
