Update on cyclist hit yesterday morning
Yesterday morning (and again this morning) I mentioned a cyclist getting hit at 21st and Nueces, requesting any additional information y'all might have. This afternoon, the cyclist in question contacted me. Here are the details of the incident, straight from the horses mouth:
Hello there. I'm the guy that was face down in the road. A quick rehashing of the events: I was heading south down Nueces, came up to the four-way stop and slowed down to check 21st. I saw a car heading east further down the road and I mistakenly assumed that it would stop at the stop sign (assuming being a rather painful mistake), and I proceeded through the intersection. For whatever reason, the woman driving the car did not see me or the stop sign and ran into my right side going somewhere around 15-20 mph. I hit the ground and might have blacked out for a few seconds as it gets a bit blurry. EMS shows up and hauls me off to Brackenridge. They performed several x-rays and a ct scan, all of which came back showing no severe damage or broken bones. I made it out of the hospital four hours later with three staples in my head, a lot of road rash on my back and right shoulder, a swollen left knee, an incredibly bruised and busted up left hand, and a case of whiplash. I'm feeling a bit better today, just seriously bruised and sore throughout most of my body. I feel incredibly lucky that I did not sustain any permanent damage (aside from a totaled bicycle). Once the police report is filed, I will be able to determine what actions will need to be taken in regards to the woman's insurance paying for my hospital bills and bike. We'll see. Again, I'm very thankful that the incident didn't turn out much worse and I feel a bit foolish for not making sure that the woman was aware of my presence in the road. I will also be wearing a helmet from now on; once I get some working wheels. Hope this helps.
