Gobble Wobble - Thanksgiving Alleycat! - UPDATE!
UPDATE: We just got a bunch of new information about this one, as well as a flyer:
And here's what Brian has to say about the race, it's history, and who he wants to show up and participate (spoiler: EVERYONE)...
The Gobble Wobble is the first of all the races that came out of the Bicycle Sport Shop crew, from back innaday. I can't remember how long ago the first one was but it came about because of the movie Red Light Go. Anyway - it's Brent Nuttings baby and has always, for me at least, been a really fun race. Even the first year, on a 40 plus pound BMX bike and a strong headwind. Assuming it follows a similar idea as previous years, expect to carry a whole lot of shit, possibly some of it large items, and plan on putting in quite a few miles in the 2 hours allotted. Which is cool because there are typically zero cars on the road so it's a very surreal, but nice, day of riding. And unless your family does T-day dinner @ 11 am, you should be golden in terms of keeping everyone (including yourself!) happy.
So, briefly, in case your computer can't open jpg files:
Day: Thanksgiving - Thursday, Nov 27th
Time: Registration at 10 am, race from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm
Start: Lamar Ped Bridge
Style: Scavenger Checkpoint
Messed up flyer: YesOpen to every single person that rides a bike and can make it: For sure. Seriously, invite everyone you know. Worst they can do is not show. Best thing? Come dressed as a gigantic turkey. You can literally ride any bike you want to. Just make sure you can carry some stuff!
Ok, now go look at that flyer and try to figure out how you're gonna live up to that standard. And don't forget to come out and race Sunday night too!

Everything I hear about this race just keeps getting better and better, and I love this all-inclusive shit. If I make it out to this one I'll have to ride a wacky bike for sure.

Read Brian's previous message, as well as information about the upcoming Ausin-Roubaix race under the cut...
Here's the dirt, straight from Brian. They want a big turnout for this one so TELL EVERYBODY:
Just to avoid any more confusion - and get people excited...
There will be a Gobble Wobble this year. For those of you who know - this should be great news. For the rest of you...this is the first race our group did a million (ok, maybe 6?) years ago, after we saw "Red Light Go!". It's always been a Brent Nutting thing. It's on Thanksgiving. The weather has always been really good, except the wind the first year, and it's sooo cool riding around the streets of Austin with no traffic at all. Pretty much one of the best days to put on a race, if you ask me.
Anyway - it will be in the morning, so you have time to make it lunch or dinner with the fam. I think Brent said 10-noon. I'll send out more about it later and correct that if I'm wrong.
The style of the race is typically MASSIVE scavenger hunt plus some checkpoints, so make sure you have some form of luggage. They used to be pretty long too, although I think Les has kind of bumped up what's considered long nowadays so we'll see.
Ok, so tell everyone you know that rides bikes. This should be a HUGE race. I've done it on 20" BMX a couple years so no excuses! It's one of the more fun races out there and on a day when no one should be working.
See you all soon.
BDjp.s. It's starting to cool off - get ready for alerts of alleycross races. And keep sending me ideas for the Austin Roubaix race. I've got some really good ones but can always use more.
So not only are we getting another killer thanksgiving alleycat, but there are gonna be some alleycross (and maybe some ghettodrome?) races as the weather continues to chill out. Put the fat tires on y'all, because it sounds like we're in for a bumpy ride.
And that Austin Roubaix thing? The roads on which the Paris-Roubaix is raced are the definition of busted. Shit like this goes down regularly, and the riders who take on this hellish one-day race are the most hardcore mofos of the professional cycling world. Well, Austin's got busted streets, Austin's got mud, Austin's got hardcore mofos, why can't Austin have an Austin-Roubaix race? If you've got any good streets in mind (like the downhill on Montopolis between Oltorf and Riverside) shoot Brian an email and let him know, it may get included in a race!
I swear to God, it seems like every time there are good races to be raced, I am on the side lines injured.
