The bike Gods must have been with me last night, as they allowed me to successfully book it home, 12 miles away, in the cold, at midnight, half drunk, with no problems!

This morning I was shocked when 100 yards from the house while cranking up the first steep hill my chain ring was tacoed off the spider. Three of my five stack bolts were missing! Now, I've never checked these, I mean the bike is only 4 months old, but I do ride a lot, hard.

Live and learn I guess...

So, should I loc-tight these? Any other critical components need loc-tight on a bike?

I greese the outside of the bolts where they contact the spider and crankarm. I also greese the spot where the chainring contacts the spider. Then I locktite the chainring bolts.

no grease on the chain ring bolts. and you shouldnt need lock tite either if the bike is 4 months old its probably past due for a service and checking the chain ring bolts would be part of this service. theres no need to grease those bolts it would just make your bike get nasty.

fixed gears are like butt holes, every one has one.

The grease goes on the threads of the bolts, not the outside. It keeps them from seizing up over time so you can never get them out.

It doesn't make your bike get nasty at all (as you wipe off any exposed grease when you're done), but it sure helps months down the road when you want to swap something out.

... yes. Grease = anti-seize agent. Grease isn't the only one of course, but that's what it's used for in cases like that.

I was under the impression they're greased, just like most of the rest of the bike, before assembly. But loctite ought to be fine, as long as it's the blue (the stuff that will let go) -- as loctite has anti-seize properties as well.

Perhaps the person who put them on never really tightened them up?

Doug is correct, you grease the threads of these bolts, especially if you ever want to replace your rings or change your gearing down the road. I've not greased threads before and just tightened them down to my later horror when it required a drill to get them loose. Live and learn.

I'm also somewhat fanatical about bike maintenance and typically check my bolts about once a month.
