11/21/2008 - 6:00pm

Ben, manager of Juan Pelota and badass maker of coffee, sent me this flyer the other day:

Looks like he's unwittingly taken over from the previous hosts of the midnight Moonlight Tower tour! Thankfully they were looking for someone to take it over anyway, so talk about a right place, right time opportunity. He's basing his ride on an article he wrote a little over a year ago, about his own adventure in biking to all the remaining towers. He's also starting his ride at the much more sleep-friendly hour of 6:00pm, Friday the 21st. Hopefully all y'all old fogeys can make this one! ;)

i'll be there for sure, it'll be the first time i have ridden in 2 weeks! Let me know if you think this will be a drinking/libations-type ride or should i just bring the lycra?!

bike nerd fo' life, yo

Having a social hour at The Longbranch halfway through the ride is a pretty good deterrent against Lycra. But you know, be yourself...

I'm kind of hoping somebody on this ride will have a computer, so we can find out for sure. (Actually, I was lent a gps device, but odds are my Luddite ass will probably never figure it out.)

It's actually become I point of contention in the shop, not unlike 2nd grade when we guessed how many pumpkin seeds were in the mason jar. Best guess: More than 15 miles, fewer than 22.

Hope to see you there.

... get one. It's not like they aren't really cheap if you don't have to have the latest and greatest.

This particular one has all the usual features, plus a clock, back light, thermometer, wild ass guesses at calories burned, etc. The only downsides is that it's on the large side, it's wired (but that's not all bad -- fewer batteries to deal with, and it doesn't occasionally think you're going 223 mph (unless you are, of course) and the sensor isn't very sensitive so you have to have the magnet mounted pretty close to it. That, and it says Schwinn -- but a sharpie can fix that.

Wal-Mart sells something similar for $15, or something with fewer features (but it still has the important ones) for $10. Target sells the same thing for $20.

Last time I did the ride with a computer I clocked 18.8 miles, but we took a somewhat different route I believe.

you should wear lycra for sure.

fixed gears are like butt holes, every one has one.

Not 100% sure. You cover a big swathe of town when visiting all the towers, so it's not a short trip by any stretch. Last one was ~18 miles, I believe. I don't expect it to be too fast, so I wouldn't worry about the kit unless you're trying to impress a roadie.

Sweet i'll be there for sure

And get off my lawn!

Hah! I was actually talking about the Austin Bike Blog guys due to their entry about sleeping through the last full moon cruise, but you've definitely got crotchety going for you, so I'll lump you in with them too. It's a good crowd to be in, since I guess eventually all of us end up there.

I'm excited about this ride. The last 2 I went on were pretty freaking awesome.
