Aautbruac - this might just be the best thing ever...

I typically don't post the regular mountain bike rides since they have their own support network in place to get the word out and don't need any of my help, but this is just too awesome not to let y'all know about:

Aautbruac (Austin area united, trail bicycle riders un-able to coast) rides are starting this Sunday 1/4/09 at Walnut Creek park 12:00 noon, meet at the pool parking lot - pinic tables.

Only requirement is that your bike does not freewheel/coast......otherwise known as fixed gear, trails will be ridden - so mtb's are highly recommended. WC is the first of many planned rides of Aautbruac (or whatever this group may be called - hey be nice!)

My lofty goal is to have a dozen riders (fixed gear - dirty dozen), that compete as a team in the next Enchilada Buffet, should be in Oct. If that goal is not met.....sadly - I will not compete in the EB.....or at least not on a un-coasty bike!
BTW - I did the EB in just less than a dozen hours

Fixed gear mountain biking. If those four words are only 1/3 as awesome as they sound, then this is going to be the best time on a fixed gear bike EVER. Hell with all that backwards circle, hopping like a pogo stick, skidding like you pulled a leg muscle bullshit, this is where it's at. I've got my 1x1 built up as a single-speed freewheel, now I need to build a new back wheel for it. Anybody have a 135mm spaced fixed gear hub they want to loan/sell me? I promise to put it to VERY GOOD (aka. ridiculously irresponsible) use. I'll even promise to wear a helmet, since it seems all the cool kids are doing it these days...

Do you still need a 135mm hub? Was hoping to see you out at the ride! We had a blast, total of 4 fixed gear trail riders. We did over 20 miles out there at good ole' WC. 2 of us were brake-less, one of those was a full fendered commuter with 35c semi's! - We plan to do it again - same time same place, for a few more rides at WC - then move on to the green belt and other places.

For those that don't know what the EB is: Enchilada Buffet; A ride that starts at Walnut Creek park - through town to Zilker park then on through the Barton creek green belt, side trails on up to hill of life on out to 360 to City park to 360 then on to Thumper then back to WC. 76 miles or so, about half trail and half road.
The first rider in, was on a geared 29er hardtail: 7 hours 7 minutes. I was the only fixed gear bike - full rigid 29er: 11 hours 29 minutes. That was the first EB ride, should be another this Oct.

why coast? - when you can pedal!

Yeah, I didn't have the parts to throw together a wheel for my 1x1. When I have some spare change I'm going to be ordering the bits and pieces I need to build one but if you've got a spare hub you'd make me a deal on, let me know, it'd definitely speed up the process.

In the meantime I have a fixed gear wheel on a 700c cyclocross frame. If you're doing this again I'll have to drag it out.
