First "sharrow" markings and "may take full lane" signs going up on Barton Springs, plus dialing for federal dollars!
According to KEYE news, in the upcoming months the City of Austin is going to be installing their first "sharrows" on Barton Springs Road, near the Robert E. Lee intersection. VERY COOL! If you want to see the actual news story they ran last night during the 6 o'clock newscast about the new lane markings, check it out. Wonder how many streets beyond Barton Springs are going to be covered in that $97 grand the City Council ok'd for this study. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Beyond the local money being spent, the city is also going to be lobbying for around 5 million dollars in federal bucks to improve cycling infrastructure around town. Both Rob D'Amico and the cats at Austin Bike Blog have already covered this news, and they both break down what all those millions are going towards: mainly more bike lanes, shared use paths, connecting existing lanes and trails, and barrier removal at heavily used thoroughfares and intersections. Sounds like a bunch of great plans to make this city of ours more bikeable. All this good news has gotten me PUMPED! I love this shit! Thanks for pushing everyone to contact their City Council representatives, Rob. With everyone working together towards a common goal, it seems the sky's the limit as to what can be accomplished. Now we just need to be persistent and make sure the city's Bicycle and Pedestrian Program sees everything through.
Give me the $98,000 and a bunch of volunteer bike riders and I can cover half the city in reflective sharrows :)
But I guess it wouldn't get the stimulus money if it didn't create jobs...
