Austin Bike Blog one step closer to achieving sentience
While I was out getting my cheap drink on at the Airport Bar, talking shit and ripping my pants riding Boone's brand new brakeless, clipless, fixed gear tall bike, Elliot and Marcus over at the (ex-)Austin Bike Blog announced some big changes happening on their site. Don't worry, you're not losing anything, but you are gaining a whole big list of new features: profiles and reviews on EVERY bike shop in town, a handy how-to repair and bike maintenance guide, reviews of bike routes, coverage of races and events, profiles of local bike peoples (racers, shop owners, etc), all tailored to that wacky Austin audience they've been reaching out to for the past year. I'm telling y'all, forget Skynet, at this rate Austin on Two Wheels (their new moniker) is going to be the all-encompassing network that eventually achieves sentience and brings about the human-robot apocalypse.
They're also soliciting readers to submit their stories in an effort to greater cover the local scene. Pretty much like how you send me emails, but instead they want you to flesh it out and actually write the article around it. If you want to be heard this is a great outlet for it! Don't expect the same leniency on this site, I'm a dictator and I keep this shit on lock-down.
Unfortunately all this progress comes at a price, and that price is sponsorships, ads, and all the evil that goes along with it. I personally believe that money taints everything it touches, which is why I steal everything involved in the making, advertising and running of this website. I'm seriously hoping that they can stay above it all and keep up the good fight, as I've really enjoyed what they've contributed to the community. Best of luck fellas!
Go check out their write-up on the matter for a whole lot of superlatives and stuff like "fastest growing cycling site", it's good shit.
And guys, if you're gonna snag pictures/text for events from my site, is a little credit too much to ask? ;)
I was surprised to read this, but thanks man. When you commented on our site this morning I was gonna reply and say "yep pretty soon we'll be doing reviews of $34 NEXT "mountain bikes" from Wal-Mart and talking about their high-quality construction"...
So yeah we've debated for quite a while about doing ads and all that. It's a hard decision but we have to make $$ for all this time we're putting in somehow, we don't have day jobs working for THE MAN :)
On your last note there - I thought we had been crediting you but if he isn't I'll make sure we do. We love your site and everything you do.

I posted this earlier but I guess I broke the internet!
Thanks for the post. I just hope our site doesn't start a nuclear war and send a robot back in time to kill my mother.
Sorry able the cite sourcing on yesterday's story. I've fixed it. I'm usually pretty fastidious about citing sources, but if I miss something, let me know. But if money is the root of evil and by the reason property is too, then we shouldn't care, right? ;)

I've gotta admit I was somewhat inebriated when I posted that comment on your page, I didn't mean for it to sound as snippy and cynical as it did at the time. I know you guys aren't going to be giving good reviews to Walmart bikes, I just consider ads, money and sponsors a slippery slope. I remember the conversation we had a while back at Juan Pelota about ads and my reaction at the time, I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from. I too know that everyone needs to make a buck and if you're putting in a service for a community, you expect to get paid for it. I really do love what y'all do and even though it's not always really my style you've got a great message and I appreciate it. Keep it up y'all.
Day jobs are overrated. They just get in the way of all the fun biking there is to do out there. Like I'm about to go do right now over my lunch break.
We've got different sites and different outlooks on what we're doing. I respect that and would prefer to be ad free. It's just at this point, our blog has become a part time job, and we've both got mortgages to pay (and kiddos in my case.) We had kind of reached a point where we needed to cut back or forge ahead. We'd much rather be using our talents to support the cycling community.
I love your site. Keep it up!
