Perl Izumi's rain resistant jacket...
ISN'T! I got freaking drenched this morning! Can anybody recommend a decent rain jacket that won't have me sweating my ass off or soaked by the end of an hour ride?
I had a hell of a weekend. Crazy parties, ridiculous brawls, DNF race results, and a whole lot of fun. I entered the Underground Underwear Race on Sunday but due to heavy drinking the night before, a sustained 15mph headwind everytime I even LOOKED south, and sub-optimal bike selection for racing, I bailed out about mid-way through. Basically I considered the proposition of riding from 45th and Guad all the way down to the cupcake shop on South Congress and decided bombing the Hancock golf course on a tall bike and crashing a nearby friend's place sounded like more my speed. Thankfully Doug was a stronger man than I and managed to photograph the entire race, including the finishing point at Hey Cupcake! If you've never had a cupcake from these cats, check 'em out. They're amazing.
Unfortunately (as is usually the case) since I have yet to perfect cloning technology and have had to brutally kill all the resultant monstrosities to date I was unable to be in multiple places at the same time to check out all the other events going on over the weekend. Never fear though, Lee was on point and took a whole mess of Fabulous Friday race pictures, starting here. He also captured all the wild antics at the Fast Folks after-party, so take a gander. Fast Folks is the latest bike shop to open in Austin and primarily caters to riders of the fixed gear variety, though I'm sure they'll be plenty helpful if you happen roll up on something else as well. They're located at the far-east end of 6th St, right before it dead-ends. BJ's been putting a lot of work into his baby, so if you're in the neighborhood you should drop by.
For the last 6 years I've been using the Marmot PreCip jacket

About 2 years ago I ripped the zipper off and REI gave me a new jacket without hesitation. The nice thing about it is that it has a huge hood that can accomodate a helmet (but the hood also cinches around your head if you're riding without one) and it has pit zips. Riding with the pit zips open, you stay dry both from rain and from perspiration.
Maybe try an army wet weather top from a surplus store? I use an camo poncho that's great. It rolls up real small so I can carry it with me wherever. I haven't found anything that breaths well, though. I'd rather just carry an extra shirt with me in the summer than sweat balls.
I've heard good things about ponchos. more here.
(Haven't tried them myself. Normally, I'm one of those guys who avoids riding in the rain, and when that fails, I just get wet -- no big deal.)
A few guys I did some touring with had these rain jackets, which were less than half the price of the fancy ones the rest of us bought, and worked way better. Cheaper = worth a shot, right?

I want some sort of waterproof, breathable jumpsuit for those rainy days.
I've heard some people say they've had good results with motorcycle gear, but that stuff's expensive.
