Man charged in Hit-and-Run on cyclist last Saturday
Just saw the following story posted to the Blotter yesterday that I thought y'all would like to read. Check it:
Man accused of injuring cyclist in hit-and-run, police say

A bicyclist was injured Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a driver who attempted to flee the scene of the wreck, according to an arrest affidavit.
The affidavit says a cyclist was riding eastbound on Seventh and Medina streets around 2:30 p.m. Saturday when a car turned in front of him. The bicyclist braked to avoid the car but his bike was caught on the car, the affidavit said. He was dragged several feet, the affidavit said.
Police said the driver, 28-year-old Hermino Herrera, then ran a stop sign and fled the scene, according to the affidavit. Herrera later rolled his vehicle over in a wreck in the 3600 block of south Interstate 35, the affidavit said. He was not seriously injured.
The bicyclist suffered injuries to his knee and abdomen. Herrera was charged with failure to stop and render aid, a third degree felony.
The cops actually charged the guy who hit the cyclist?!? Holy crap! Though I'm happy that he got hit with SOMETHING, I'm still suprised that he wasn't hit with a failure to maintain assured clearance or failure to yield right-of-way charge as well, which seems to be SOP with a car vs. car collision. Also, does anyone know who the cyclist is? If so (or if you're the cyclist) let me know. The article says the driver wasn't seriously injured in his crash, but I'm more concerned with the state of the cyclist.
Notice that they didn't say whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet, which in my opinion, reflects positively on their coverage since the helmet wouldn't protect his knee or abdomen anyway (and if the cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet, including that info would subtly cast blame on the cyclist). Also - how on earth do you crash with a cyclist and then roll your vehicle over a little further down the road...if you are not impaired in some way???
